How to Obtain Great References

Raphael Sternberg, an entrepreneur, offered some great advice for working professionals seeking to obtain excellent business references.

Sternberg noted that you could build a good reference by demonstrating how your work has helped solve their problem–whatever that is. He also mentioned how it’s essential to “make a big deal about them in an email or conversation. In addition, he advised against using generic phrases like “they’re great at what they do” and “I admire how she stays late.”

How to Obtain Great References

1. Build a Great Resume

Sternberg stated that you can build a good reference by “demonstrating how your work has helped solve their problem–whatever that is.” He also mentioned how it’s essential to “make a big deal about them in an email or conversation.” In addition, he advised against using generic phrases like “they’re great at what they do” and “I admire how she stays late.” And lastly, he stated that it’s important to show humility when speaking about someone with whom you’ve worked.

2. Keep in Touch

Sternberg encouraged professionals to “know your contact’s hot buttons” and said you should “be on their radar.” He also recommended sending a holiday card and other simple gestures and going out of your way to introduce them to someone else.

3. Get Referrals from Your Contacts

Sternberg emphasized the importance of asking for a referral from a current or past coworker, which is advantageous because “you’re not a stranger.” He also noted how it’s helpful to follow up with your contacts, especially when they are busy and don’t have time to see you.

4. Ask for a Referral Later

Sternberg noted that “it’s not always possible to ask for a referral.” He explained that the main reason why it’s challenging to ask is that you are “showing weakness” or “being impatient.” Sternberg said, however, that you should make an effort to build up your contacts until you are comfortable taking the initiative later.

5. Listen Carefully

Sternberg encouraged business professionals to take notes when conversing with contact and make sure they take notes of what their clients should thank them for. According to Sternberg, the most important thing here is to “listen carefully,” He explained how it’s essential not to be distracted by other things when conversing with someone. He then recommended engaging in conversation that doesn’t allow you or your contact to be bored.

6. Practice Good Manners

Sternberg emphasized the importance of good manners and said that you should always “be polite” and “be courteous.” He also stated that it’s important to show gratitude in your conversations as this will make them more likely to give you a favorable reference when asking for one.

Raphael Sternberg recommended doing your best to “get along with your colleagues and with your clients” since this will help you build a favorable reference and make it easier for you to obtain a job.
