World Telecommunication Day(May 17th)
|
|
World Telecommunication Day commemorates the founding of the International Telecommunication Union in 1865. The first World Telecommunication Day was celebrated in 1969. Since then the 17th of May has been observed as World Telecommunication Day every year.
The World Telecommunication Day has been identified by the Tunis phase of the World Summit on the Information Society as "World Information Society Day", since 2006.
Functions and Role of the ITU
ITU was formed following the increasing demand for domain names among internet users all over the world. The function of the ITU is to co-ordinate global telecom networks and services with governments and the private sector. The ITU also sets international regulations and treaties to facilitate international communication.
It works towards development of telecommunication systems in developing nations. Though it ITU was founded in Paris, its present head-quarters are located in Geneva, Switzerland.
The World Telecommunication Day celebrates and acknowledges the following developments that have taken place over the years:

|
Birth details of Eddy Arnold:
- Eddy Arnold Was born on May 15, 1918. Eddy Arnold was an American country music singer.
Career and Achievements of Eddy Arnold:
- Arnold had to face many challenges of life to gain recognition in the music world. Finally, he got a job as the lead male vocalist for a band called Pee Wee King band.
- By the year 1943, Arnold reached the image of a “solo star” on the Grand Ole Opry.
- n the same year, Eddy Arnold signed a contract by RCA Victor. All of his early records earned well but a very big hit in 1946 broke all the records with "That's How Much I Love You."
- In many other countries and amongst the western singers of that time, Eddy Arnold was popular by a nickname: "The Tennessee Plowboy."
- Col. Tom Parker use to manage the career of Arnold. Soon Eddy Arnold began to dominate country music. In 1947-48, 13 of the top 20 songs were sung by Arnold only.
- Gradually, he started singing from radio to television. Eddy Arnold was successful in the new media. In 1955, the pop-oriented records of "Cattle Call" and "The Richest Man (In the World)", became popular outside the country also.
- Due to the increasing popularity of rock and roll, his record sales came down in 1950s.
But in association with Jim Reeves, he kept trying to entertain his fans by using pop-sounding, string-laced arrangements. The style that later became popular as the Nashville sound. In 1964, Jerry Purcell became Eddy Arnold manager. Now Arnold’s ambition was to spread carrying his music to a larger number of audiences. ....More |
