Popularly known as Rio, it is the capital of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Second largest city of Brazil, this city is famous tourist attraction. One of the most visited city in Southern hemisphere, tourists are attracted because of its natural beauty, Bossa Nova, Carnival celebrations, Samba dances, balneario, lively people, etc.
As soon as you reach Rio, the statue of Christ, the redeemer welcomes you. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This world famous statue is about 30 meters high and is placed on a pedestal that is 8 meters high. It is located on a 710 meters high mountain of Corcovado. There is a chapel in the honor of the Lady of Aparecida, who was a patron Saint of Brazil.
Another attraction is the Sambodromo, which is a permanent grand stand lined parade avenue. During Rio carnival this avenue is used. Sugarloaf Mountain with cable car is another famous stop. One of the world’s largest football stadiums, Maracana Stadium is famous among sport buffs. In the year 2016, Rio de Janeiro will host summer Olympics which is the first time in the history of any South American city. In 2014, Maracana stadium is going to host the final match for FIFA World Cup.

Portuguese explorers founded Rio de Janeiro as they entered Guanabara Bay in 1502. The city was named in honor of the day, Rio de Janeiro or River of January. In order to gain an economic as well as strategic advantage in Brazil, French traders also settled in this area. After some time French were expelled from this area and Rio was moved up on a hill. Rio exported sugarcane and later on gold and diamond mines were found in the area making it rich.
After handling economic crisis in 19th century, Rio again bounced back and started exporting coffee. Slowly and gradually Rio gained its prominence once again and Brazil became an independent nation.
Rio de Janeiro is a state and after Sao Paulo, it is the second biggest city of Brazil. Rio is situated on the south-east coast of Brazil at the inlet of Guanabara Bay. Surrounded by mountains with the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer on one side and Atlantic Ocean on the other side, Rio presents an enchanting view.
Sandy paradise beaches over 50 km in length attract sunbathers and explorers in large numbers. Copacabana beach is the world famous beach in Rio.
Climate of Rio de Janeiro is marked with tropical and temperate with high temperatures throughout the year but at the same time sunny weather to stroll around. The temperature usually ranges between 25 degree C / 77 degree Fahrenheit to 30 degree C / 86 degree Fahrenheit.
