Among the seven continents of the world, North America ranks the 3rd position in size and the 4th position in population. It covers an area of 9,540,000 sq miles which comes around 16.5% of earth’s land area. North America, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Arctic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, includes 23 countries. North America is the repertoire of important minerals, including iron ore, copper, nickel, and uranium. The State of Mexico has large deposits of petroleum and natural gas. North America is famous for its mountain ranges which include Sierra Madres, Cascades, Brooks Range, Alaska Range and Sierra Nevada.

North America hosts four major deserts that are spread out over western United States and northern Mexico. They are Chihuahuan Desert, The Sonoran Desert, The Great Basin Desert and The Mojave Desert. Among these Chihuahuan Desert is the largest desert in North America.
North America includes lot many islands. The major ones include Greenland, Baffin Island, Bylot Island, Devon Island, Tanaga Island, Great Sitkin Island, Baranof Island, Gareloi Island, Akutan Island, Kiska Island, Etolin Island, Louise Island and Mitkof Island. Among these Greenland is the largest island in the world.
