Different local tribes and ancient African races came here and inhabited in different times. Almoravids took control over this entire region and ruled for a long time before European forces like France started exploiting Mauritania in the 15th century. And they kept dominating till the later part of the 20th century. Thus this place has become a blend of typical African, local tribes having a European flavor.
