Marrakech

Marrakech which is also written as Marrakesh is known as the “Red City”. It is known as the former imperial city in Morocco’s history. Marrakech is the capital of `Marrakech tensift-Al Haouz in the foothills of Atlas Mountains. Before the Almoravids in the 11th century, the area was ruled by Aghmat. Abu-Bakr Ibn-Umar who was the leader of Aghmat decided that the place was getting very crowded and decided to build a separate capital. The new city was built near the Tensift River.

Later Abu-Bakr was succeeded by Yaqub al-Mansur. During his rule, the city boomed and did very well. Manu scholars and poets came to the city and the construction of the Koutoubia Mosque and a new Kasbah. Before the Moulay Ismail’s reign, Marrakech was the capital of Morocco.

Marrakech for centuries was known as “seven saints”. It consists of tombs of many well known figures which now attracts many tourists to Marrakech. The seven saints is a well known institution which attracts many tourists every year. The popular seven saints are- Sidi Muhammad al-Jazuli, Sidi Bel Abbas, Sidi Abu al-Qasim Al-Suhayli, Abdelaziz al-Tebaa, Cadi Ayyad ben Moussa and Abdallah al-Ghazwani.

Marrakech Weather & Climate

Marrakech has a semi-arid climate with hot and dry summers and wet winters. The average temperature is 23 degrees Celsius in summer and 12 degrees Celsius in winter. The climate and weather in Marrakech is similar to the Mediterranean climate. The city receives very less rainfall as compared to the Mediterranean Climate.

Things to See and Do in Marrakech

Marrakech is visited by many tourists to see the popular valley of Ourika River located in the Atlas Mountain. The Draa River which is located in the south near the Sahara desert is also visited.

One can tour around the Middle Atlas Mountains where the popular Waterfalls of Beni Mellal is there and the Essaouira which is another popular site is located in the Atlantic ocean.
