Mahaparinirvan special train is a tourist train that takes its passengers on a Buddhist spiritual tour both from India and abroad. Joint venture of IRCTC (Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd) and Indian Railways, this special tourists train was built specifically for Buddhist pilgrimage more than 2,500 years ago.
Mahaparinirvan special train is a connecting link to all the important places of Buddhist pilgrimages in India. Apart from this, it also takes its pilgrim passengers to a Buddhist place in Nepal. Named as “Mahaparinirvan Express”, it hosts all the basic facilities and service a luxury train is supposed to have.
Mahaparinirvan special train takes its passengers cum pilgrims on an eight day/ seven night tour to important places associated with Buddha’s life- Bodhgaya, Varanasi, Nalanda, Kushinagar, Lumbini, Sravasti and Agra.
Dating back to Buddha’s history, Lumbini is the birth place of Buddha. Bodhgaya was the place where he attained enlightenment, Sarnath- the place where Buddha started to learn, and Kushinagar- the Nirvana place of Buddha. These places are filled with art and architecture of Stupas, Chaityas and Viharas.
This Buddhist Circuit Train starts from Delhi, usually once or twice in a month taking its passengers cum pilgrims to Delhi, Gaya, Rajgir, Nalanda, Gaya, Varanasi, Sarnath, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Lumbini, Gorakhpur, Gonda, Sravasti, Agra, FatehpurSikri, Agra and back to Delhi.

Mahaparinirvan special train has 18 coaches of first AC, 92 coaches of two-tier AC, and 256 coaches of three-tier AC. Passengers can book for a Buddhist Package Tour that would include travel, catering, sightseeing and entrances free of various places and stay.
