Lufthansa Airlines History

Lufthansa Airlines is the flagship airline carrier of Germany. It is the biggest airline in Europe in relation to the maximum number of airline passengers. The word Lufthansa comes from two words. The first word is “luft” which is German for air. The second word “hansa” pertains to the Hanseatic League, which was a powerful trading group in medieval times.

Lufthansa Airlines ranks fourth in the world in regard to total number of passengers. It has services to 203 international and 18 domestic destinations spanning 78 countries throughout Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Australia. Lufthansa Airlines boasts of a total of 410 destinations and has a fleet of 710 aircraft. It is ranked as the World’s second-best airline.

Lufthansa Airlines Headquarters

The corporate headquarters and registered office of Lufthansa Airlines is Deutz, Germany. The main operations base, also known as the Lufthansa Aviation Center and the primary traffic hub of the airline is based at Frankfurt Airport in Frankfurt, Germany and the second hub is situated at Munich Airport, which is also in Germany. The majority of pilots and other airline employees live in Frankfurt.

History of Lufthansa Airlines

• The earliest record goes back to 1926 with the formation of Deutsche Luft Hansa in Berlin which was suspended in 1945 with the defeat of Germany.

• The new Lufthansa was formed under the name of Aktiengesellschaft für Luftverkehrsbedarf in 1954.

• Lufthansa introduced Boeing 727s into their fleet which used to fly between Frankfurt and New York in 1958.

• This service was later expanded in 1961 to fly to locations such as Thailand, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Bangkok.

• Lufthansa added the destinations of Nigeria, Lagos and Johannesburg in 1962. Lufthansa first started using Boeing 727s in 1964 and Boeing 737s in 1968.

Lufthansa Modernizes its Fleet

• Lufthansa’s modern era could be said to have started with the introduction of the Boeing 747 which happened in 1970. This was later followed by the introduction of the airbus in 1979.

• A complete overhaul of the company’s fleet began with extensive ordering of several aircraft from Airbus and Boeing in the 1990s.

• The 2000s saw even more expansion by the introduction of Airbus A380 super jumbos.

• One of the most significant milestones of this era was the opening of Terminal 2 at Munich by Lufthansa. This was a first example of an airline part-owning an airport terminal.

Lufthansa Airlines Features and Facilities

• One of the first things which strike the passenger while flying Lufthansa is that the food and drink is free.

• The seats on most of the Lufthansa flights are comfortable with lots of leg space.

• There are several frequent flier incentives available. For instance, if you are a frequent flier, you can carry three pieces of luggage instead of one.

• The quality of food on Lufthansa is unanimously good.

• Separate screens are provided to each passenger for viewing the in-flight movie or TV.
