Kodaikanal Hill Station History
Kodaikanal is a city in the hills of Taluk part of the Dindigul area in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Its name means "The Gift of the Forest". It is referred as "Princess of Hill Stations". It has an long history as a retreat and popular tourist destination.
Kodaikanal History
Kodaikanal is a retreat from high temperatures and steamy diseases of plains. The earliest explicit references to Kodaikanal and Palani Hills are set up in Tamil Sangam literature of early Christian period. Modern Kodaikanal was originated through British bureaucrats and American Christian Missionaries in 1845, as a retreat from the summer heat of the plains. In 20th century a few privileged Indians came to realize the assessment of this captivating hill station and began spending their holidays here.
Tourism has been crashed by industrial fumes issues including the closing of a mercury industrial unit owned through Unilever's Indian contributory Hindustan Unilever after confirmation of prevalent mercury pollution.
Places To See At Kodaikanal
Berijam Lake
The Berijam Lake is one of the famous places and nice for a day out for picnic. Rich in natural beauty, the lake is situated 21kms away from the Kodaikanal bus stand. Berijam Lake offers drinking water to Periakalam town.
Bryant Park
It is located on the eastern side of the Berijam Lake. And it is popular for rafts, hybrids and flowers. There are a variety of flowers that blooms all around the area. In the month of May, a horticultural show is celebrated here.
Shenbaganur Museum
The Shenbaganur Museum is situated approx 5 km from the lake. And it is maintained through Sacred heart College. It is in one of the best orchidoriums in the country and have more than 300 species of orchids with a wide range of birds as well.
Kodaikanal Lake
Kodaikanal Lake is the most beautiful lake of the place. And it is however, an artificial lake. Strangely, it has the shape of a star. It stretches over a length of 60 acres. With verdant greenery everywhere it is a big attraction of Kodaikanal. The boat club offers a number of pleasure and also racing trips.
Pillar Rocks
There are 3 boulders surrounded by the city limits, standing side by side perpendicularly measuring to the height of approx 122 meters.

There are 2 telescope houses which allow guests to have a scenic view of hills and the close by towns.
Kurinji andavar Temple
Kurinji andavar Temple is a pious temple where Lord Murugan is worshipped. Kurinji andavar Temple is approximately 3 kms far from the Kodaikanal Lake. It provides beautiful views of northern plains and also the Palani hills.
Silver Cascade
The unusual Silver Cascade waterfall is situated on the Ghat Road about 8 kms from Kodaikanal. And the run over of Kodaikanal Lake falls here from a lofty height of 180 feet.
Bear Shola Falls
Bear Shola Falls is a popular picnic place which is situated 1.6 km from the lake. It is named Bear Shola Falls because Bears used to come here to drink water.
Kodaikanal Weather
Kodaikanal weather is pleasant all through the year. But the finest time to visit this place is from April to June and from September to October. The months between October and March are sopping and chilly. These months advised to be avoided unless, of course, you want some real adventure. In January, the whole landscape turns to a white sheet of ice as, the minimum temperature falls below zero degree celsius. The summer season, however, is the perfect time to visit Kodaikanal.
