Nihon-koku commonly known as Japan is an East Asian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. It spreads over an area of 377,944 square kilometres. Japan has a parliamentary government with constitutional monarchy. The country is known as the Land of the Rising Sun. The population rate is above 127 million people which make Japan the 10th largest country in population. Capital of the country is Tokyo which is the largest city in Japan. Japanese is the national language of the country.
Japan includes 6,852 islands. The major islands among them are Honshu, Hokkaidō, Kyushu and Shikoku. Honshu is the largest island in Japan which hosts 80% of the population of the country.
Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Kobe, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Kawasaki, Saitama, Hiroshima, Sendai, Kitakyushu, Chiba, Sakai, Niigata, Hamamatsu, Kumamoto, Sagamihara and Shizuoka are the major cities of Japan.
Japan hosts a large number of mountain rages. A few of them are active volcanoes. Japan has around 108 active volcanoes. The major mountain ranges in Japan include the Akaishi, Hido and Kiso. The highest mountain range in Japan is the Japanese Alps. It is located on the island Honshu. The highest point Mt Fuji is a dormant volcano. It is 12,388 ft high. Lake Hachirogata is the lowest point of the country. It is -13ft below the sea level.
As it lies on the Ring of Fire, Japan is a major earthquake zone. The destructive earthquakes happened in Japan are Tokyo earthquake in 1923, Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995 and the recent Tohoku earthquake in 2011.
Most of the rivers in Japan are very short. The largest river in Japan is the Shinano. It is 228 miles long. Other major rivers of the country are Teishio, Tokachi and Yoshino River.
Lake Biwa, Akan, Suwa, Shikotsu, Inawashiro and Lake Kattura are the main fresh water lakes in Japan. Other lakes include Saroma, Shinji, Hamana, Ogawara and Nakaumi Lake.
