As per the 2011 census the population of the country is 1,210,193,422. It comes around 16.7% of the world’s population. India is a federal constitutional republic with 28 states and 7 union territories.

India, the largest democracy in the world includes 28 states. They are Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.

Indian Union Territories

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, National Capital Territory of Delhi, Puducherry are the union territories of India.

Rivers in India

Ganga also known as Ganges is the longest river in India. It is 2,525 km long. Other major rivers are Satluj, Indus, Ravi, Beas, Jhelum, Yamuna, Chambal, Ghagra, Kosi, Betwa, Son, Brahmaputra, Narmada, Tapti, Mahanadi, Luni, Ghaggar, Sabarmati, Krishna, Godavari, Cauvery and Thungabhadra.

Indian Lakes

Largest lake in India is Lake Chilka. Other major lakes include Dal Lake, Bhimtal Lake, Roopkund Lake, Vembanad Lake, Pushkar Lake, Osman Sagar Lake and Husain Sagar Lake. The last three lakes are artificial lakes.

Indian Mountain Ranges

The major mountain ranges in India are Aravalli Range, Atharamura, Eastern Ghats, Ghats, Himalayas, Ladakh Range, Langpangkong Range, Namcha Barwa Himal, Nilgiri mountains, Ongpangkong, Pir Panjal Range, Rimo Muztagh, Saltoro Mountains, Satpura Range, Siachen Muztagh, Sub-Himalayan Range, Tsurangkong, Velikonda Range, Vindhya Range and Western Ghats. The Baily Bridge built by the Indian Army in August 1982 is the highest bridge in the world. It connects the Dras and Suru rivers in the Himalayan Mountains.
