Idukki Hill Station History
Idukki is one of famous hill stations of South India. It is enormously alluring for travelers looking for an escape to the lush green mountains and a venture with difference.
Idukki History
The history of idukki is unclear. There is no fact found about the Paleolithic age. The Idukki district was a part of Kongu Nadu and olden Chera country. For the period of 800-1102 A.D, including Peer made taluks and Devikulam Udumbanchola was a division of Kingdom of Vembolinad. For the period of 16th century big part of Idukki area came under the kingdom of Poonjar Raja. Idukki is a leading area of Kerala. And it has a district of 4476sq.km. The area resides approx 13% of total district of state of Kerala.
Agriculture is a major profession in Idukki. Floriculture, dairy farming and Mushroom cultivation are practiced here.

Idukki region is one in the middle of 14 regions of Kerala state, India. It has its head office at Kuyilimala in Painavu.

Asia’s major arched dam, Idukki Dam made across Periyar River is a part of attraction. Second major tourist attraction is Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary Occupying a part 70 sq. km the asylum is natural territory for the bison, elephant, sambhar, deer with a wide diversity of birds and snakes like jungle foul, laughing thrush etc.
Not far-off from Idukki are Moolamattam and Cheruthani which justify a visit.
You can have sight of surroundings from the elevation of Cheruthani and remote the city of Cochin. Moolamattam is popular for being abode to powerhouse of Idukki Hydroelectric Project.

Idukki Arch Dam
Idukki Arch Dam is considered 2nd arch dam in the whole world. It mounts to an elevation of 550 feet high and broadens to and size of 650 ft. Astonishingly, there is a prominent legend with this dam. Two citizens were cursed through Lord Rama when he seized them staring at bathing Sita. Today, Idukki arched Dam connects two hillocks Kurathi Mala and Koravan Mala. You can take pleasure ride on a boat on the river.
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is nearby Idukki Arch Dam and wraps a division of Udumpanchola taluks and Thodupuzha of Idukki district. The complete area covered through the park is 77 sq km out of which 33sq km is engaged to the lake formed owing to construction of three simulated dams Idukki, Kulamavu and Cheruthoni. The animals that can be viewed here are bears, elephants, deer, leopards, tigers and wild pigs. And also to be viewed are snakes like rat snake, ciper, iguana, cobra, python and birds like kingfishers, woodpeckers and hornbills.
Idukki Waterfalls
Two waterfalls - Rainbow Waterfalls and Thomankuttu - are situated at a space of 20 and 25 km from the Thodupuzha. Waterfalls are a perfect destinations for those people who like to have picnic in the natural surroundings.
Karikodu Bhagwathy
Situated near the Annamalai Temple, the temple has Lord Bhagwathy as its leading deity. The temple is about 460 years old. Only Hindus are allowed to go into the temple between 5 to 11 am and then from 5 to 8 pm.
Sri Krishnaswamy Temple
Sri Krishnaswamy Temple was made by the emperor of Keezhmalainad. Like several other temples of Kerala, this temple permits only Hindus to visit its premises. The timings are 6 to 11.30 am and 5 to 8 am.
St Thomas Church
St Thomas Church is situated 8km away from Thodupuzha. It is believed that it is one of the oldest one in Idukki. It is about 600 years old. It was built by St. Thomas.
