Hawaii has a rather pleasant climatic condition as it is surrounded by the ocean on all side. The place is never too hot and neither too cold at any time in the year and this is the main attraction for the people from different part of the world who comes to the Hawaii Island on a holiday.
The different regions of the islands have different climate and at the higher mountains, the temperature is cooler while at the sea level it is warm and pleasant. The average temperature of the island is 76 degree Fahrenheit with only a small variation of about 5 degrees dip or rise in winter and summer respectively. The island has only two seasons, the summer or the Kau from the month of May to September when the sun is directly above, and the wind rushes from the northeast, and the winter or ho'olio, from October to April when the land receives more rainfall and the winds are variable.
The wind pattern in the Hawaii is very complex and the trade winds coming from the sea are the most common wind here. The trade winds may have an average speed of 12 miles which may sometimes increase at regions having the mountains. The wind speed is the highest during the summer season and inconsistent and weaker winds occur during the months of winter. The storms occurring during winter season may exceed up to a value of 60 to 80 m per hour but the speed may be changed depending on the terrain.
Occasionally violent winds occur at the areas of Kula and Lahaina on the Maui Island. The strong down slope winds that occur along the section of the lower slopes on the sides of Mt. Haleaka in the Kula District are the Kula winds. The extremely violent but infrequent winds that occur in the down slope region of the Lahaina are the Lehua Winds. The Hawaii islands also have light to moderate upslope winds that occur in the day and moderate down slope winds occurring at the night which is the circulation of the sea and the land breeze in the area.
Intense local rainstorms do occur at Hawaii which are not the result of trade winds. These local storms which are accompanied by thunder, lightning and heavy rainfall occurs in the month of summer but usually covers an area of less than a few square miles or sometimes just a single square mile. The Kona storms and the Cold Front Storms are common storms which occur at Hawaii in the winter seasons and they also bring rainfall with them.
Hawaii is very rarely hit by hurricane and it usually occurs once in about ten to twelve years. The most recent hurricane, Iniki that had done significant damage to the property and the land, was hit in the year 1991 at Kauai and parts of Oahu.
