Gulf Air History
Gulf Air is the national airline of the island Kingdom of Bahrain. It is linked with about 45 destinations worldwide and covers up to 28 countries spanning the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa. Bahrain International Airport is the main base of Gulf Air.
The airline was first started in 1940 by a British pilot named Freddie Bosworth who initially operated the service between Bahrain, Dhahran and Doha. Today, this airline has grown into a mighty organization, having codeshare agreements with different airlines all over the world. The aircraft flown by Gulf Air are mostly different models of Airbus and Boeings.
History of Gulf Air
- As mentioned earlier, Gulf Air began its journey in the year 1940.
- In 1951, Gulf Air joined hands with the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC).
- The governments of Bahrain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Oman invested in Gulf Air in 1973 to make it the national airline of their respective countries.
- By 1976, the airline had greatly expanded adding destinations from all over the world such as Amsterdam, Bangkok, Cairo, Bombay, Athens, Dhaka, Jeddah, Karachi, Cairo and Manila.
- In the 1980s there was a further expansion of the airline, and it became a member of IATA.
- In 1990, Gulf Air celebrated its 40th anniversary and shortly after this, it became the first Arab airline to have a direct flight to Australia.
- In 2006, Abu Dhabi withdrew its partnership following the formation of its own airline, Etihad Airways.
- In 2007, Bahrain became the exclusive owner of Gulf Air following the withdrawal of Oman.
- Today, Gulf Air continues to add more destinations and also to add new aircraft to its fleet on a regular basis.
Facts about Gulf Air
- Today Gulf Air is completely owned by the Bahrain government through Mumtalakat Holding Company.
- Gulf Air has been around for more than 60 years now but has survived well amid rising fuel costs and recessions.
- The cargo section of Gulf Air is known as Falcon Cargo and caters to different categories of goods ranging from general cargo to dangerous cargo as well as high value and special handling cargo.
Gulf Air Features and Facilities
