Guatemala is a country in Central America. It is bordered by Mexico to the north and west, Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, Caribbean to the east, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. The country is spread over an area of 108,890 square kilometers.

As per 2009 estimates, Guatemala houses 13,276,517. The official language of this country is Spanish. Guatemala lies between 13 degree and 18 degree north latitudes, and 88 degree and 93 degree west longitudes.

Guatemala Lakes

  • Lake Atitlan- This Lake is 26 km long and 18 km wide.
  • Lake Peten Itza- This Lake is 48 kilometers long covering an area of 98 square kilometers.
  • Lake Izabal- More than 45 kilometers long covering about 590 square kilometers, Lake Izabal is surrounded by tropical rainforests.

Guatemala Climate

The three regions in Guatemala namely, the highlands, the Pacific coast and the Peten region vary in climate due to the elevation and landscape. The climate in the highlands with 800 and 1600 meters above sea level, the average minimum temperature ranges between 12 degree to 16 degree Celsius and the maximum from 29 degree to 22 degree Celsius.

Guatemala experiences rainfall between May and October with an average annual rainfall of around 1,300 millimeters. Summers in this country runs from November to April.

Guatemala Flora

 A wide variety of flowers can be found in Guatemala of which the orchid family is of particular interest. Found in abundance are medicinal plants, industrial and fibrous plants.

Guatemala Fauna

The fauna of Guatemala has 250 species of mammals, 600 species of birds and 200 species of reptiles and amphibians. Some of the fauna of this place are jaguar, puma, crocodile, iguana, coati, tapir, spider monkey, howler monkey, humming birds, Montezuma oropendola, vulture, kinkajou, jaguarondi, peccary, quetzal, paca, scarlet macaw, toucan, coral snake and tarantula.
