Great Sphinx of Giza

Great Sphinx of Giza

The Egyptians were skilled architects and builders. They built amazing monuments that would be difficult to construct, even with the technology at our disposal. On a visit to Egypt and the Great Pyramid of Giza you will get to see a reclining structure that has the head of a man but the body of a lion. It is the Great Sphinx of Giza.

Sphinx Meaning

The sphinx has been a part of European, Asian, Greek and Egyptian mythology and can be seen in carvings and statues across the world.Interestingly, the name Sphinx means ‘strangler’ and was first given by the Greeks. The Greeks considered the Sphinx to be female. The Sphinx is treacherous and merciless who would gobble you up whole if her riddles were not answered. On the other hand, the Egyptians sphinx is mostly male. He is considered to be benevolent and a protector. In Egyptian architecture, the Sphinx is seen guarding the entrances of temples.

The Great Sphinx in Egypt

The Great Sphinx is the largest statue in the world that is made of a single block of stone. It stands 66 feet high, 241 feet long, 66 feet wide. It is located on the Giza Necropolis in front of the Great Pyramid.

The Sphinx faces east and historians associate the sphinx with the sun-god Ra. It is believed that the Sphinx guards and protects the Giza Necropolis.

Who and When

There are many hypotheses suggested by different historians about the origins of the Sphinx and whom it represents. Some suggest that it is the face of King Khafra who had it built in 2500 BC. Others suggest that it is even older, made during the reign of King Khufu. There are still others who suggest that the Sphinx is older, even more than 10000 years old.

The Sphinx Now

The Great Sphinx is made of sandstone and remained buried for most of its lifetime in sand. This is the only reason why it is still standing even today. Humidity, sub-soil seepage and air pollution are damaging the Sphinx. The Sphinx has already lost its royal beard, nose, cobra emblem and other pieces of masonry. Many efforts have been made to restore the Sphinx, most of which have not been too successful.
