Georgian Airways Background
One who flies by Georgian Airways is likely to be traveling to or from a destination in Georgia. It is important to be moderate in judgment of the services and efficiency of this airline considering that it is a fledgling airline owned by a fairly new nation. Georgia had the first democratic elections and became independent from communist rule in 1991.
The next few years were marked with much political upheaval with several changes in government and political movements such as the Rose Revolution in 2003. The present government is still in the process of attempting to introduce economic reforms and therefore there are several positive expectations regarding Georgian Airways in the years to come.
- Georgian Airways was founded in the year 1994 under the name of Airzena.
- Initially, the airline operated for businesses on a chartered basis.
- Scheduled and regular flights were introduced in 1997.
- Air Georgia and Airzena were merged in 1999 where, Airzena Georgian Airlines was formed and the name was retained up till 2004.
- Modern jets such as CRJ-100 and CRJ-200 were added to the fleet in the year 2009.
- The year 2011 saw a considerable expansion of Georgian Airways with the inclusion of Tehran, Moscow, Tel Aviv, Batumi, Odessa, Donetsk and Odessa to its list of destinations
- The main passengers of the airline are from the capital city Tbilisi, Israel, Russia and Ukraine.
- Georgian Airways resumed its services to Moscow in 2011 the extension of an existing contract.
- This will benefit Georgians who live in the vicinity of Moscow.
- Georgian Airways is also a member of the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC), which gives them a lot of leverage in terms of sales projections and settlement of transactions for corporate travel.
- Although the facilities offered are rather basic, this airline attempts to keep its passengers happy with an amiable crew who are helpful with the limited resources at hand.
- Airzena flies a Boeing 737 with all the modern fittings that go with air travel today.
- Georgian Airways intends to purchase some more Boeing B737s in 2012 including a Boeing 787 in the years to come.
- The in-flight meals served on this airline are moderately good. This is served along with a glass of wine in the business class but wine is not included in the menu in economy class anymore.
- Cases of lost or diverted baggage are usually handled fairly efficiently.
