Gangotri Hill Station History

Gangotri is a town which is situated in Uttarkashi area in state of uttarakhand, India. It is considered Hindu pilgrim town on the Shore of Bhagirathi River. And it is on greater Himalayan Range, at an elevation of 3,042 m.

Gangotri History

The holy place of Gangotri is located at a height of 3048 m in the middle of captivating surroundings. It is situated at a space of 99kms from Uttarkashi. In 18th century, the temple was constructed through Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa which is located at the left shore of Bhagirathi. Lakhs of pilgrims come to this place every year. Several ashrams are situated on other side and some of which offer accommodation amenities to visitors.

Tourist Attraction in Gangotri


In 18th century, the temple was constructed through Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa which is located at the left shore of Bhagirathi. The temple was refurbished through Maharaja of Jaipur in 20th century. The white marble formation has an elevation of 20 feet.


It is located near temple. Natural shivling is a place at where Lord Shiva obtained Ganga. And the shivling is evident only in winter when water is pure and clear.

Gaumukh Glacier

This is muzzle of Gangotri Glacier and present basis of Bhagirathi River. And it is detained in high esteem through devotees who do not overlook the chance to have a sacred dip in bone chilling freezing water. It has 18 km away from Gangotri which has to be wrapped on foot via ponies. And the trek is simple and several people return to Gangotri the similar day. Ponies and porters are accessible for tours to Gaumukh and new trekking routes at Gangotri.

Pilgrims trek to Kedartal (18 km) and Nandanvan (6 km) from Gangotri.

Submerging Shivling

According to mythology, this natural rock Shivling is place where Lord Shiva sat when he obtained Ganga in his knotted locks. And it is evident in the months of winter when water level diminishes.  

Nandanvan Tapovan

It is located at the opposite of Gangotri glacier. This is the place where tourists can have a fantastic view of majestic Shivling peak.


It is situated 10 km away from Bhaironghati across Uttarkashi and close to convergence of Bhagirathi Rivers and Jat Ganga. Bhairav Nath temple is contained by broad forests is appeal visiting.

Bhairon Mandir

After traveling from Lanka to Bhaironghati one has to traverse Jahanvi River on foot. And after crossing Jahanvi river Bhairon temple can be seen.


It is situated 92 km away from Gangotri. Lately it has appeared as a place of visitor interest because of creation of dam across Bhagirathi River. The ensuing lake at Maneri has attached to charm of place.
