The Republic of Ecuador, widely known as Ecuador, is a South American country that spreads over an area of 272,046 square kilometres. It includes Galapagos Islands. The neighbouring countries include Colombia and Peru. As per the 2010 estimate the population of Ecuador is 14,790,608. Quito is the capital of the country.
Ecuador includes 24 provinces. They are Azuay, Bolívar, Cañar, Carchi, Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, El Oro, Esmeraldas, Galápagos, Guayas, Imbabura, Loja, Los Ríos, Manabí, Morona-Santiago, Napo, Orellana, Pastaza, Pichincha, Santa Elena, Santo Domingo, Sucumbíos, Tungurahua and Zamora-Chinchipe.
Three major geographic regions of Ecuador are La Costa, La Sierra and La Amazonía. The insular region of the country comprises of Galápagos Islands.
The largest city is Guayaquil located in the Guayas Province. Other major cities include Quito, Portoviejo, Cuenca, Machala, Santo Domingo de Los Colorados, Ambato, Manta, Duran and Riobamba.
Chimborazo which is 6310 m tall, is the highest mountain in Ecuador. Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Antisana, El Altar, Sangay, Tungurahua, Guagua Pichincha, Sumaco, Reventador have active volcanoes in them. Other major mountains include Iliniza Sur, Iliniza Norte, Carihuairazo, Cotacachi, Sincholagua, Quilindana, Morurco, Corazon, Chiles, Puntas, Atacazo, and Pasochoa.
Major lakes Ecuador include Black Lakes of Jumbura and Cuicocha.
Galápagos Islands, Isla de la Plata, Puná Island and Santay Island are the major islands in Ecuador.
Pastaza River, Napo River and Putumayo River are the major rivers of Ecuador that rise in the sierra region and flow either towards Amazon River or towards Pacific Ocean.
Cueva de los Tayos, a natural cave located in the Andes Mountains is a major attraction of Ecuador.
