Costa Rica officially known as the Republic of Costa Rica is a Central American country bordered by Nicaragua, Panama, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. San Jose the largest city of the country is the capital. Spanish is the official language. Costa Rica spreads over an area of 51,100 square kilometres. The population is 4,608,426 as per the 2011 estimate.
Costa Rica comprises of seven provinces which include Alajuela, Cartago, Guanacaste, Heredia, Limon, Puntarenas and San Jose. They are further divided into 81 cantons, which include 421 districts.
Mountains dominates a major part of Costa Rica. Most of the mountains have active volcanoes in them. Most active volcano is located in the Tilaran Mountains. The Poas, Barva and Irazu are other main volcanoes. Talamanca Mountains are the highest of Costa Rica Mountains. Cerro Chirripo, the highest point which is 12,500 ft high.
Isla Calero which covers an area of 151.6 square kilometres is the biggest island in Costa Rica. Isla Brava, Isla Del Coco, Isla Damas, Isla Del Cano and Isla Uvita are the other main islands of Costa Rica.
Tenorio Volcano, Turrialba Volcano, the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, The Poás Volcano and Irazu are the main volcanoes in Costa Rica. Irazu, erupted destructively in 1963-65, is the tallest volcano in the country. It is 11,260 ft high.
Major rivers of Costa Rica are Naranjo River, Corobici River, Pacuare River, Penas Blancas River, Sarapiqui River, Rio Frio, Rio Celeste, Reventazon River, Toro River, Tempisque River, Tarcoles River and Savegre River. Among these Corobici River originating from the Guanacaste mountain range is one of the cleanest and freshest rivers of Costa Rica.
