CanJet Airlines Background and History

  • CanJet Airlines is a low-budget airline based in Enfield and Nova Scotia in Canada. This airline operates services linking locations throughout the United States and Canada. CanJet airlines are founded in 1999 and operations were commenced on 5 September 2000. Originally, this airline was formed as a result of the merging of the groups Canada 3000 and IMP group, just before Canada 3000 filed for bankruptcy.
  • The group went through some rough times for the next 2 years culminating in the re-launching of CanJet in June 2002. This airline began with three destinations to start with but soon expanded its operations. CanJet had a fleet consisting of 9 Boeing 737s of which 7 were used in the US. The aircraft used had been built in the 1990s. Although there were some further expansion plans these did not materialize till later.
  • In the year 2004, CanJet began to operate out of Hamilton/John C. Munro International Airport at Hamilton to fill the gap created by the shifting of WestJet to another area.
  • The actual expansion of CanJet began in 2005, in the direction of western Canada, with the addition of Toronto and Calgary on their map. These thrusts were initially aimed at moving in to areas where the airline Jetsgo moved out following bankruptcy. This was also an attempt at consolidation of their market share in a market where bankruptcy was becoming increasingly comment.
  • In June 2005 however, competitor Air Canada Jazz introduced services to Hamilton. This compelled CanJet to move out of Hamilton they started services from Toronto to Fort Lauderdale in Florida.
  • In 2006, a marketing pact was signed between Canjet and Harmony Airways which would replace regular and planned services with chartered service as a result of increased competition in the Canadian aviation industry which was effectively whittling down profits. The airline actually refunded tickets to passengers who bought tickets after the conversion to charter operations became effective.
  • From the year 2006 till the present day, the policy of chartering has continued with Canjet Airlines. In 2009, the airline was doing considerably better which made moves to rehire pilots and staff who had been laid off in 2006. This sudden spurt of recruitment was a result of Canjet Airlines getting a contract for flying chartered flights for Sunquest, a tour operator.
  • Today, Canjet continues to have presence all over Canada. It is partnered with Transat AT which is based in Montreal and charters Boeing 737 aircraft which belong to Canjet. The present agreement with Transat follows a previous relationship with Westjet which is based in Calgary.
