California Weather or Climate

The climatic conditions of the state depend on the geographical conditions of the same. Geography play an important role as the climate is affected by a lot of factors such as wind currents, proximity to the ocean, altitude etc. California is located on the western seaboard of the United States of America. The geographic diversity of the state ranges from the coastal region exposed to the Pacific Ocean to Sierra Nevada mountain range in the Eastern direction. One can experience an array of climatic conditions for example California has a desert (Mojave Desert) as well as snow covered mountains in the south.

Climatic Conditions in the Valley

  • The Central Valley is at located at a considerable distance from the shore. This is the main reason behind the Mediterranean climate experienced over there. Though the climatic conditions can be classified as Mediterranean the numbers can go to extremes in some cases. This is an observed fact while analyzing the climate of California.
  • As the Valley is located away from the coast, it is not exposed to a lot of humidity and thus has a few if any water resources. This makes the climate extremely arid and dry. Such conditions are also prevalent in the Desert region of the State of California.

Climatic Conditions of the Coast

  • The coastline offers the most hospitable or rather enjoyable climatic conditions. The winters at and near the coast are wet but the temperature does not dip too low so as to cause discomfort.
  • The San Francisco Bay Area is in fact known for the pleasant climate as it offers a lot of flow of maritime air in to the interiors of the state. This increases the humidity and decreases the heat in the region. This clash is also the cause of thick fog which in some extreme cases covers up the Golden Gate bridge of San Francisco.
  • Due to the proximity to the coast one can experience somewhat warmer winters and relatively cooler summers. The temperature is extremely volatile though. For example the average temperature in San Francisco in the months of July and August is 20 degrees Celsius whereas 20 miles away it is 31 degrees Celsius.

Adverse effects of Climatic Conditions

  • Sometimes the unpredictable climatic conditions lead to a lot of destruction of property in the state of California. The climate of California is extreme in some region and the heat winds are sometimes responsible for starting and sustaining wildfires. California has since a long time been a spectator to this natural crisis and the damage inflicted by these wildfires sometimes runs in to hundreds of millions of dollars. Such winds are called Santa Ana’s and these occur generally in the spring and fall season.
