Bulgaria comprises of 28 provinces. The capital of Bulgaria is Sofia. Bulgarian is the official language of the country. As per the recent estimate the population of the country is 7,364,570. Five major countries bordering Bulgaria are Romania, Serbia, Republic of Macedonia, Greece and Turkey.

The Balkan Mountains, Rhodope mountain ranges and Rila range are the major mountains in Bulgaria. Musala Mt. located in the Rila Mountains is the highest point in the country. It is 9,594 ft high. The lowest regions of the country include the Danubian plain in the north and the Upper Thracian Plain in the south.
Major rivers include the Danube River, the Maritsa, Archar River, Banska River, Dragalevska River, Nestos River, Rezovo River, Vladaya River and Iskur.
St. Anastasia Island, Belene Island, St. Cyricus Island, St. Ivan Island, Kozloduy Island, St. Peter Island, St. Thomas Island and Vardim Island are the major islands of Bulgaria. Among these St. Ivan Island is the largest Bulgarian island which spreads over an area of 0.66 square kilometres.
Lake Ariana, Lake Beloslav, Burgas Lakes, Durankulak, Lake Shabla, Lake Pancharevo, Lake Rabisha, Seven Rila Lakes, Srebarna Nature Reserve and Lake Varna are the major lakes in Bulgaria. A few of them are artificial lakes.
