Air India History
Air India is the national airline of India. It is a government-owned enterprise and has a fleet of several Boeing and Airbus aircraft. Air India flies passengers and cargo to destinations in Asia, Europe, Australia and North America. It is the third-biggest airline in India, the second two being Jet Airways and IndiGo from which it faces stiff competition.
Air India has its corporate office at Nariman Point, Mumbai, and there are two terminals, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai and Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. The livery of Indian Airlines is in red and white colors. The airline’s logo is a Konark Chakra and a flying swan. The red and orange colors of the logo symbolize vigor and advancement.
History of Air India
- Renowned Indian entrepreneur J R D Tata inaugurated Air India in the year 1932 under the name of Tata Airlines.
- It started with a single-engine De Havilland Puss Moth which used to carry mail from Karachi to Ahmedabad and Bombay.
- After independence 49% of the company was acquired by the Indian government.
- In 1953, the Indian government exercised its option to purchase a major share and the company became Air India International.
- From the 1960s, Air India introduced Boeing 707 and 737 jets along with other airlines.
- In 1993, Air India purchased its first Boeing 747 and named it Konark.
- In February 2011, Air India and merged with the Indian domestic carrier Indian Airlines combined with other subsidiaries which resulted in the formation of Air India Limited.
Facts about Air India
- Air India has 26 international destinations and 49 domestic destinations which span over 19 countries covering North America, Asian and Europe.
- The fleet consists of Airbus A310, A320 and A330. Boeing 737s, 747s and 777s are also used.
- The average age Air India’s aircraft is 9 ½ years. There have been ten fatal air crashes in Air India’s history and the fatal events per million of this air carrier is 6.82 per million.
- Air India has won several awards and recognitions such as awards by Galileo Express TravelWorld and the Readers Digest Trusted Brand award.
- This airline also holds a Guinness record for the maximum number of people evacuated by a civil airliner for its evacuation efforts during the war between Iran and Iraq in 1990.
Air India: Features and Facilities
- Air India boasts a luxury lounge known as the Maharaja Lounge which is the Hindi word for the Emperor’s lounge. This is available to first class and business class passengers.
- There are five Maharaja Lounges in India and two in London and New York.
- Air India offers modern in-flight entertainment using technology from the Thales TopSeries IFE systems for entertaining the passenger during the flight. Personal screens and monitors are however not available to Air India passengers.
- Air India has a dedicated cargo service to most destinations throughout India and the rest of the world. The latest technology in cargo-tracking software is used.
