Uruguay Etymology and History
The word Uruguay holds its derivation from theGurani`. The word Uruguay has various meaning among which;
- “River of those who bring food” is one of the famous meanings of the time of Jesuit Lucas Marton.
- “River of the country of the Uru” is another meaning according to which the name of the country is derived from the name of a bird, which is found near the river Uru.
- “River of colorful and painted birds” this is the interpretation of the country’s name made by Juan Zorilla de San Martin.
The prior European colonilization inhabitants of Uruguay were the hunter-gatherers known as to be Charua` Indians which was known as to be a small tribe of the Gurani` Indians of Paraguay. Uruguay remained a cause of rift among the people Spanish and Portuguese.Colonia del Sacramento; was built by the Portuguese, later on the Spain’s expansion increased in Uruguay. Uruguay struggled a lot to regain its independence from the Spanish rule under the command of Jose Gervasio Artigas.

Montevideo is serving as the capital of Uruguay since the time of its independence. Apart from being the capital it is also the largest city of Uruguay.

The total population of Uruguay is estimated to be 3.46 million. Among the vast population the 1.7 million people have found their home in the capital of the country that is Montevideo, which is also known as the largest city of Uruguay.
