UEFA Rankings

UEFA has improved earlier coefficient ranking system and declared these alterations on 20th of May 2008. As earlier UEFA rankings will be calculated every second year of November. The change in new system is that all the teams which have played the game recently in full cycle of World Cup as well as European Championship will be gaining points in rankings. Ranking points will be added at the end for each and every game played on the completion of latest half cycle. Here full cycle means that all those qualifying games along with final tournaments while half cycle means all those games that were played in the latest qualifying round.

There are certain rules set for awarding the ranking points for each and every game that took part in two and a half cycles as following:

  • Despite of the match results it will be awarding 10,000 points for each match played.
  • Incase if a team has won then it will earn additional 30,000 points even if it will draw then in that case it will be earning extra 10,000.
  • If a game is decided as a penalty shoot-out then at that time points will be allocated as draw while winner of the shoot-out will be gaining extra 10,000 points.
  • Each and every match in the final tournament or play-offs will determining qualification as well as they will be granted some extra bonus points. These points will be in range of 6,000 points for every play-offs or World Cup group stage games, to 38,000 points for playing in finals.
  • Incase if a goal is earned then 501 points are awarded but if it loses then it will be awarded -500 points.
  • Coefficients will be calculated for each two and a half cycle that is by dividing the sum of earned points with the number of games played by each team.

Calculation of Country Co-efficient and Country Ranking Formula:

Country Coefficient per Year = Round down (Number of Point per Country/Number of Teams per Country, 3);

Country Ranking Over 5 Years = Sum (Country Coefficient per Year);

Calculation of Team Co-efficient and Team Ranking Formula:

Team Co-efficient Per Year = 0.20*Round down (Number of Points Per Country/Number of Teams Per Country, 3) + Number of Points Per Team = Country Coefficient Per Year / 5 + Number of Points Per Team;

Team Ranking over 5 Years = Round down (Sum (Team Co-efficient Per Year), 3);
