Turkey Etymology and History

The English term of the word Turkey has derived from Mediaeval Latin word ‘Turchia’.

History informs us that the first inhabitant arrived here during the 7500 BC. Hittites were instrumental in forming the first civilization in this part of the world. Massive invasion of the sea people from Greece was also very important. Then came the era of the great Alexander who booted out the Persians from this place. After the death of Alexander numerous civil war took place here.

Roman had also ruled here for a long time. During the later 13th century, the Ottoman Empire had come and ruled here until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Thus over the years, this place has remained as one of the greatest pillars of the world-history. European colonial powers at different times had tried to dominate this land. Even during the World War II, turkey remained as a crucial point.

Turkey is a democratic country and a parliamentary representative. This country is traditionally secular and president here is considered as the head of the state. The judiciary system here is free of the legislature and the executive. Council of the state considered here as the last resort of all administrative cases. In Turkey the Prime Minister is choose by the members of the parliament. The present PM of this nation is Recep Tayyip Erdogan, former mayor of the state of Istanbul. Till 2005, there were 50 legal political parties in this country. This country is also there in the list of the UN Development Programmes. Any person above the age of 18 has the right to vote. The parliament of this country consists of 550 members and they have a 4 year term. Turkey is divided into 85 election districts along with 81 governmental provinces. Currently the parliament of this country is made of 7 parties.

Turkey is geographically divided into various parts like; Marmara, Black Sea, Eastern, Southern and central Anatolia etc.

Turkey is one of the founders of the OECD and G20 Industrial Nations. Economy in this country, over the years has flourished majorly because of foreign investments. During 1995-1999 turkey witnessed economic crisis but the scenario has changed for the past 3-4 years. Istanbul is not only the capital of turkey but it is one of the major business hubs of the middle-east Asia and Europe. Istanbul is also famous because this city holds about 35 billionaires. But to improve the overall economic growth of this country, it needs many other large and small scale industries that will provide jobs to thousands of people of turkey.

Due to its positioning, Turkey is made of a varied range of demographics. Here you will get to see a mixed kind of people and their culture that ranges from typical Asian and the European people. The literacy rate among the men is quite good that is almost 95.6% and in many parts of this country still there is a feudal attitude rules. But here you will notice another thing that the Muslim, Christians and people from other religion living happily.

Government must also be applauded as they have been constantly boosting the cultural activities here by investing in art fields like museum, theater, opera houses and art galleries.

Turkey has managed to win 36 Gold, 19 Silver and 19 Bronze medals in the Summer Olympic Games. They haven’t won any medals in the Winter Olympic Games.
