Trinidad and Tobago Etymology:

Trinidad and Tobago was found by Christopher Columbus on 31st July, 1498 and has given the name after Holy Trinity. The name of the other is land Tobago significantly derives fromtobacco that is smoked and grown by natives.

 

Trinidad and Tobago History:

The cigar like shape of Trinidad and Tobago provides it with the Spanish name and perhaps the country’s Amerindian names of the Urupaina and Aloubaera. E.L. Joseph, the great historian claimed that the Amerindian name of the country was derived from the Iere for the hummingbird yerette or the ierette. Nevertheless, the Boomert says that the Caeri or the Cairidoes not signify tucuchi or the tukusi and the humming bird did.

From the total population of Trinidad and Tobago, 96% of the population lives on the island of the Trinidad and the remaining 4% resides in the Tobago. The racial composition of theTobago and Trinidad reflects the history of immigration and conquest. The two main racial groups in the country are the Afro- Trinidadians and the Indo- Trinidadians accounts for near about 80% of total population, where as the mixed- race inhabitants, European, Chinese,Euro- Trinidadian, Arab Trinidadian and Chinese Trinidadian makes up the rest of the population.

Trinidad and Tobago is also the birthplace of the steelpan and calypso music, which is broadly claimed to only the auditory musical instrument that was invented in 20th century. The different religious and cultural background allows the large number of the ceremonies and thefestivities all through the year. The other forms of the indigenous art consist of the chutney, Parang, Rapso and soca music that was made popular by pichakaree and Cheryl Byron and also the popular Limbo dance.

The education in Trinidad and Tobago is mandatory and free for the children of the age group of 6 to 12 years. The net and the gross rates of the primary enrollment were not available of the year 2001. The reports have concluded that the school dropouts and the absenteeism are the main problems; in some of the regions the system of the school suffers from the inferior physical facilities and over crowding.
