Tajikistan Etymology and History

In Persian Tajikistan is known as to be the land of Tajiks. According to the folk etymology Tajik is a geographic reference to Taj (crown) of the Pamir Knot. The central Asia’s ethical politics has made the word Tajik more controversial, according to which they symbolized that Tajik are only ethnic Tajiks not Ethnic Russians, Uzbek etc. 
Tajikistan has been under the rule of many empires among which the Persian Empire ruled for longer duration.

Arabs brought the Islam in the 7th century. Later on a small Jewish community migrated here and formed a small community. In the 19th century Tajikistan came under the Russian empire. Tajikistan’s guerilla soldiers started war against the Bolshevik. However the result of the war was not so good mosques and villages were burned in this war.

Tajikistan Demography

7,320,716 are the estimated population of Tajikistan according to the July 2006 estimates. The Tajik speaking people are the main ethnic group in Tajikistan but along with it Uzbeks and the Russians also have a good amount of people. Russian language prevails in most of the business and governmental work, however the official language is Tajik. Tajikistan has the highest rate of literacy, which is 98% that includes the people who can read and write Tajik. A majority of people in Tajikistan follows Sunni Islam, along with it Shia Islam following people have a sizeable number.

Tajikistan Government and politics

Tajikistan got into a Civil war just after getting its independence, which is supposed to be backed by the Iran and Russia. The peaceful election of free Tajikistan took place in the year 1999, which is after the cooling down of the Civil war in 1997. Tajikistan holds election for the appointment of the President and Parliament. The elction, which took place in the year 2005, are accused to be a foul play with an allegation from the opposition parties on the president for manipulating in the process of election. Tajikistan because of its active opposition has gained the status among few countries, which have the active opposition.

Tajikistan Culture

Considering the history the Persians and the Tajiks are alleged to be of the same origin, mush of their language is same. Tajikistan holds a majority of two-third of the population who speaks Tajik and the Pamiri living in the rest of the part of the country speaks a large number of East-Iranian languages.
In the mountainous region of the northern Tajikistan reside the Yaghnobi people with a total population of 25000. Forced migration in the 20th century ceased their number. The language Yaghnobi people speak that is Yaghnobi language is the only descent of the Sogdian language in Tajikistan.

Tajikistan Economy and Infrastructure

Tajikistan was the poorest country in the Soviet Union as well as in central Asia because of the followed Civil war just after its independence in the year 1991. The dependency on the foreign revenue was met by the export of aluminum and cotton because of which the economy of Tajikistan was very vulnerable to shocks. The total GDP of Tajikistan is estimated to be $ 8.802 Billion (according to 2005 estimates); where as the per capita GDP of Tajikistan is $ 1,388. Economy grows with a boost after the Civil war was once over in Tajikistan. The major came out to be seen between the years 2000-2004 when GDP of Tajikistan increased at the rate of 9.6% (according to World bank Data). Tajikistan has an active participation as a member of the Economic cooperation organization (ECO). The completed Anzab Tunnel has made a new Silk Road between the Capital Dushanbe and the previously hard to reach northern part of the country.

Another new bridge between the Afghanistan and Tajikistan has paved the way for the trade with the south Asia.

Tajikistan Geographical setting

Tajikistan is the smallest country in Central Asia, which is completely landlocked. Pamir mountain range covers the country, and rest of the country is 3000 meters above the sea level. The lower laying areas of the country are a part of Fergana valley. The capital city, Dushanbe is located in the southern slops, which are above the Kafirnigan valley. Amu Darya and Panj River are the rivers that flow through Tajikistan and also make the boundaries with the Afghanistan.

Tajikistan got its independence declaration on 9th September 1991. However the completion of independence was on 25th December 1991.
