Sierra Leone

Officially the country is known as the Republic of Sierra Leone. It is the country which is located in West Africa. The country is bordered in southeast by Liberia, in southwest by Atlantic Ocean and in northeast by Guinea. The country has the tropical climate, with the varied environment which is ranging from the savannah to the rainforests.

History:

The Archaeological findings has displayed that the country is continuously populated from near about 2,500 years, which is inhabited by the successive movements form rest of the parts from Africa. In the 9th century, the use of the iron was introduced in the country and the agriculture was practiced in 1000AD by the coastal tribes. The densely tropical rainforest of the country protect the country from the influence of the empires of the pre-colonial African.

Demographics:

The official language of the country is English which is spoken at the government administration andschools. The Krio is lingua franca which is spoken virtually in all parts of the country. The Krio unites all diverse racial groups, particularly in their interaction and trade with every one.

Government and Politics:

The country is the constitutional republic with directly designated president and also the unicameral legislature. The recent system of the government of the country which was established under the constitution of the year 1991 is modeled on the subsequent structure of the country’s government i.e. the executive, judiciary and legislative. Since from the independence, the politics of the country is dominated by 2 main political parties, the All People’s Congress and Sierra Leone People’s Party.

Culture:

The large number of people lives in western and eastern regions of the country. There are approximately 18 racial groups, mainly among the Temne and Mende. The Mende form near about more than the quarter of total. The other groups consist of the:

Economy:

The country is very slowly emerging from the protracted civil war and is also displaying the signs of successful transition. The consumer confidence and the investors continue to grow, adding the impetus in the economic recovery of the country. There is successful resettlement and re- habitation of the residential regions. The country has attracted the US$ 4 million in the direct foreign investment in the year 2001.

Infrastructure:

The civil war in the country has disrupted any of the further improvement in the infrastructure of the country approximately for the decade. The system of the roads in the country requires the serious repair but as lack in resources led it to neglect. The modest railway system of the country is used infrequently. The air transport in the country is focusing on International Airport at the Lungi, that prior the war and also serving many airlines as British Airways, regional airlines and KLM.

Education:

The country has the education system with the 6 years of the primary school, 6 years of secondary schools which is divided in senior secondary school and junior secondary school. The children in thesecondary schools are 13-18 years and in primary school usually 6- 12 years. The primary educationin the country is mandatory and free in the public schools that are sponsored by government.
