Phillippines Officially known as the Republic of Philippines, Republic of Philippine island country comprises more than 7000 odd islands. Although often overlooked by the world, Republic of Philippines offers many beautiful locals and delicious food for its visitors.

History of Republic of Philippines

The history of Republic of Philippines goes back to more than 2, 50,000 years. The first inhabitants were probably from the Asian mainland. Later Republic of Philippines saw the immigration of Indonesian and then the Malayan people. Republic of Philippines also remained under Islamic influence for about 100 years, which was established by Makdum. Then in 1521, Ferdinand Magellan came here and captured Republic of Philippines for Spain but later his murder disapproved this notion. Again in 1543, with the arrival of Ruy Lopez de Villalobos, the entire country except the Islamic archipelago, was occupied by Spain by 1571.

Republic of Philippines Independence

The independence movement began to grow in the 19th century and Filipinos fought on the American side and after the defeat of Spain, the Republic of Philippines was declared as independent territory in 1898. Until the Second World War, the country remained under the US colony. Finally, Republic of Philippines recognized its freedom from the United States on July 4th, 1946. 

Etymology of Republic of Philippines

In the late 16th century, the country had been named after Phillip II, the king of Spain. During his expedition to the Republic of Philippines, a Spanish explorer, Ruy Lopez de Villalobos too used the name of Las Islas Filipinas to show his respect towards the prince. Later the Filipinas was taken as official name for the country.

Republic of Philippines Neighbouring countries

The island country shares its borders with Palau, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and  the Republic of China (Taiwan). The Borneo islands lies a few hundred kilometers southwest to Republic of Philippines.

Republic of Philippines Capital 

Manila is the capital of Republic of Philippines with an area of 38.55 km². Quezon City was the former capital of Republic of Philippines with an area of 166.20 km². It is now the largest city of Philippines.

Republic of Philippines Currency

The currency of Republic of Philippines is Peso, divided into 100 centavos (or centimo). Coins of 1, 5, 10, and 25 centavos are currently used and bank notes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pesos are used.

Republic of Philippines Geographical settings

The island country is located in Southeast Asia and covers an area of  300,000 sq km. Geographically Philippines is located on a longitude of 116° 40' and 126° 34' E and the latitude of  4° 40' and 21° 10' N. The country borders  the Philippine Sea on its east, the South China Sea on the west, and the Celebes Sea on the south. The climate here is hot and the average yearly temperature recorded is 26.5 °C.

Government and policies at Republic of Philippines:

The country has a unitary presidential government where the president is the head of the state and the government. He is elected by the popular vote for a six-years term. During this period he has all the power to preside over the cabinet and appoint the Chief Justice and his 14 associates. All the judicial powers are vested in the Supreme Court.

Republic of Philippines Culture

The history of Philippines reflects in its culture and is blended with different foreign influences. Philippines is vividly seen in its art, music, dance, language and cuisine. One can notice the impact of Spanish- Mexican culture here. Since the country was a US colony until the Second World War, so the influence of American culture, is widely seen in its language and pop culture.
Like many other Southeast countries, Philippines’s culture is influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism too.

Education in Republic of Philippines

The present education system of Philippines follows the United States model with a clear separation of church and state. The natives of Philippines are taught the Christian Doctrine and the basic principles of morality along with the history. The teachings comprise of reading, writing, and principles of arithmetic along with the knowledge of decimal system. Imparting the practical training is also a part of education.

According to the 2000 census, the population of Philippines consists of various ethnic groups like

  • Cebuano 13.1%,
  • Llocano 9%,
  • Bisaya/Binisaya 7.6%,
  • Hiligaynon Ilonggo 7.5%,
  • Bikol 6%,
  • Waray 3.4%,
  • other 25.3%

The people of Republic of Philippines follow different religions like

  • Roman Catholic 80.9%,
  • Evangelical 2.8%,
  • Iglesia ni Kristo 2.3%,
  •  Aglipayan 2%,

People of other religions like Christian, Muslims also stay here in quite a big number.
There are two official languages of Philippines- Filipino and English. Apart from this other major dialects are – Bicol, Cebuano, Ilocano, Tagalog, Hiligaynon or Ilonggo, , Pampango, Waray, and Pangasinan.

According to an estimate of July 2007, the total population of Republic of Philippines is  91,077,287.
