Republic of Peru
Officially known as the Republic of Peru, the country is situated in the western America. Its territory was once home to the Inca Empire and also to the Norte Chico Civilization which is one of the oldest in the world.

Till date the country has won 1 gold and 3 silver medal in Summer Olympics. It has never got any medal in Winter Olympics.
Etymology of Peru
The name of Peru has been taken from the name of a local ruler , Birú who lived there during the early 16th century.
History of Peru
The earlier evidences of Peruvian civilization are about 11,000 years old. Later many archaeological cultures like Chavin, Chimu , Mochica, Nazca, Paracas and Wari were developed in Peru. The Inca came to be known as a very powerful state in the 15th century, and in a very short time, this state was formed as the largest empire in the pre-Columbian America. Since this empire had extensive deposits of gold and silver, it became an easy target of Spain in the early 16th century. The last ruler of Inca, Tupac Amaru and his family was executed by the Spaniards around 1572. Even his advisors too were murdered by the Spainards.
Spain ruler over Peru till 1820 when an Argentine soldier and patriot José de San Martín, defeated the Spanish forces in Chile.

Peru finally got its independence from Spain on July 28, 1821 and the freedom was recognized on December 9, 1824.
Peru Neighbouring Countries
The country shares its border with Ecuador and Colombia in its north, with Brazil in the east, and Bolivia in the southeast. In the south, Peru shares its border with Chile and with the Pacific Ocean in the west.
Peru Government and politics
The country has a presidential representative democratic and enjoys a multi-party system.
The president is elected for five years and he is the head of state and government. He only designates the prime minister and the other members. The judiciary however is independent but sometimes there is political invention also in the judiciary matters.

Peru stretches about 2,414 km as its coastline with the Pacific Ocean. The country is divided by the Andes mountains into three major zones: the coastline towards the west with much part as arid; the large mountain area with centrally located deep valleys and plateaus; the thickly forested and sloppy area which further leads to the plains of Amazon.

The country has two official languages; Spanish and Quechua. Aymara and many other minor American languages too are spoken by the locals here.

The culture of Peru basically lies Amerindian and Spanish traditions with a blend of African, Asian and some European cultures. Peru is known for its elaborate pottery, textiles, sculpture and jewellery.
Cuisine too is a blend of Amerindian and Spanish food along with a unique mix of African, Asian Italian and Arabian cuisines. It is more known for the diversity of ingredients and techniques used.

Peru is a developing country with real growth rate of 9% with an inflation rate of 1.8%.
The economy is based mostly on exports of copper, gold, zinc, textiles, and fish meal. The major trade partners of Peru are Brazil, Chile, China and the United States.

In the recent years, the infrastructure of Peru has drastically developed in almost all the fields, like telecommunication, transportation, industry, etc.
There is visible growth seen in usage of Internet services too. As per a survey done in 2007, there are 270,193 service providers in the country and 6.1 millions were using internet.
Education in Peru:
In Peru the education is free and compulsory for age group of 7 to 16. Since 1980s, the educationsystem is based on three levels:

- Primary and secondary
- Higher education
Every major city has a university for higher studies. National University of San Marcos of Lima was originally founded in the year 1551
