The country Cape Verde officially known as the Republic of Cape Verde is located on an archipelago in the ecoregion of the North Atlantic Ocean. In 15th century the country was ruled by the portugese. The capital of the Cape Verde is Praia.
Cape Verde Etymology:-
The country’s name is derived from the Portugese form for Cape Verde which means “green cape”. It is pronounced by different names: Cape refers to the “article of clothing” and Verde represents the rhyme with “bird” or “herd”.
Cape Verde History:-
The first people arrived in the country were portugese in 1460 due to which the portugese empire was established. As the country is located at the off coast of Africa it became an important watering station rather than the sugarcane plantation.
The PAIGC (African Party for Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde) played an important role in getting the independence. Also the armed forces of Cuba consisting of 50 guerrilleros played an important role. In 1975 the Cape Verde finally got independence from the portugese.
After independence the PAIGC tries to merge the Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau in one nation but the plan failed in 1980 as a result of which the African Party for Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) was formed. When PAICV was formed the democratic elections takes place and the government changes. In those elections Movimento para a Democracia won and came into power in 2001.
Cape Verde Politics and government:-
The prime minister of the country is the head of the state. The constitution in the country was established in 1992 but actually came into power in 1999. According to this constitution the President has to acquire the two-thirds of the votes to win the elections in the first round and majority of the votes in the second round.
The national assembly of the country consists of 72 members and only the president has the right to dissolve it in any circumstances. The first legislative elections held in 1991 and Antonio Mascarenhas Monteiro won that election after defeating Pereira.
Upto 2001 the battle between the MPD and PAICV continues but in the elections PAICV wins by 17 votes.
Cape Verde Geography:-
The country is located between the 15.02 N latitude and 23.34 W longitudes. The country has mainly 10 islands and 8 islets. Some of them are Barlavento, Santo Antao, Santa Luzia, Sao Vicente, Sao Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista, Sotavento, Maio, Fogo, Bravo.
The birds which are mainly found in Cape Verde are Alexander’s swift, Raso Lark, Cape verde Warbler.
The climate of the country remains hot and dry but the islands has to suffer from drought.
Cape Verde Currency:-
Cape Verdean Escudo (Euro) is the currency which is basically used in the country.
Cape Verde Economy:-
As the climate of the country is hot and dry and has to suffer with droughts, the agriculture is very difficult to do. As the relations of the country with the aid donors are good and the aid funds are used for infrastructure that’s why the rise in the economy of the country starts in late 90’s due to which it is known as the developing country.
In 2007 the General council of World Trade Organization signed a treaty and gives the permission to Cape Verde to enter WTO. As a result of which the country became 153rd member of WTO. This treaty includes that the country has to introduce the new custom codes, patent laws and copyright.
Cape Verde Demographics:-
About 499796 people are residing in the country and most of them are foreigners. Majority of the people follow the Christianity but smaller groups of Muslims and Buddhists also exists. Portuguese and Crioulo are the official languages of the country.
Cape Verde Culture:-
Due to the existence of Portuguese empire there are different types of dancing out of which the best are Morna, Funana, Coladeira, and Batuque. The instruments which are used in music are violin, guitar, and clarinet.
Eugenio Tavares was the famous poet of the country’s literature. The famous author was Manuel lopes. The poem which is popular in the country is Poesia.
Sal airport with hub at Praia airport is very much famous for transportation.
