Etymology and History of Qatar -
The word ‘Qatar’ may have derived from the Arabic term qatura that means ‘to exude’. But a mixed of opinions can be found regarding the actual etymology of this term. History informs us that the isthmus of this place was first inhabited way back to the Stone Age. Afterwards the Portuguese had conquered and vacant this entire region during the 16th century. The Al-Thani family came here in the later half of the 18th century and became the rulers. From that time the tension between the Al-Thani and Al-Khalifa family has been a part of Qatar’s history. Till 20th century, the condition of this nation was amazingly poor. Qatar has always played a crucial role in the business area of the Persian Gulf- Indian Ocean commerce. Over the years different races from the neighbouring regions like; clans, nomadic, Bahrain had come and inhabited here.
Qatar Freedom-
After a period of prolong domination by both the Ottoman and the British empires, Qatar got the status of an independent state in 1971.
Government and politics at Qatar -
The entire Qatar is divided into 10 municipalities or ‘baladiyah’ such as; Ad dawhah, Al Jumaliyah, Al Wakrah, Jariyan al Batnah, Mesaieed, Umm Salal etc. in recent times, Qatar has been playing a crucial part as it has been used by the US military soldiers as the military-base for attacking Iraq. According to the new constitution of Qatar, there will be a 45-member parliament and 30 of them would be elected directly. This new constitution became effected from June 2004
Qatar Economy-
When oil was not discovered in this region, the economy of this entire region was mostly dependent upon fishing and rich pearling. But undoubtedly the discovery of oil has certainly changed the scenario of all these countries and the cost of living in Qatar has also increased to a great extent in the past years. Today the bulk of the economy of Qatar is dependant upon oil and various natural gas exports. Having a huge collection of natural oil and natural gas, Qatar is one of the main oil suppliers of the whole world. The economy of this country has reached to such an extent that it can surely be compared with any of the European countries. Qatar besides having the highest GDP/ capita in whole Arab, is trying to become the role model for various economic transformation of the whole region.
Qatar Geography and the neighbouring countries-
Located just about 160 km from the Persian Gulf; Qatar is like a low and stretching barrel plain that is covered with sand. Spectacular ‘Khor-al-Adaid is always a treat for any traveler to this country. Here one would get to see mild winters and very humid and hot summers. A large part of this country is having its oil and natural gas collection. This is basically a very dry country and while travelling here, never forgets to keep water with yourself.
Qatar is surrounded by Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf.

Qatar presents a unique cultural that is typically Arabian and of the Asian Middle East region. Over the years numerous tribal people from the surrounding areas have come and inhabited here; thus one gets to see a wholly Gulf culture in Qatar. Typical Sunni culture also adds spice to the variety of the culture of Qatar. Thus a variety of Arabian cultures are to seen in the land of Qatar. But the traditionalism has been maintained strictly in this country.
Qatar Education-
For the past one decade or so this country has been able to develop a high-quality educational system that has helped to build the overall socio-economical growth of Qatar. Education system right from the kindergarten level to the university level has been thoroughly reconstructed and even many American universities have started collaborating with various educational institutions of Qatar. Citizens here enjoy free education and the education system of Qatar needs to be appreciated.
