The Western Conference divisions both have seven teams each, where the Eastern Conference divisions have eight teams respectively. The top three teams from each division with the highest points for the season go to playoffs. The final four spots will be made up by the next two highest-placed finishers in every conference. Two teams per conference. This means that the two wild card spots in the Eastern Conference can include below of the following:

  • Two teams from the Atlantic Division
  • Two teams from the Metropolitan Division
  • One team from the Atlantic and one team from the Metropolitan

The above teams in NHL post season format are considered as the wild cards. This pattern accepts for the possibility that any particular division could send as few as three teams to the playoffs and as many as five. When the playoffs begin, the winners of two divisions in every conference match up in opposition to the two wild-card entries. The other matchups are within the division: the second and third ranked teams in every division square off against each other.

The winners of these matches will appear to the next round to play for a spot in the conference finals. In each conference, the team which has highest score will be playing with the team that has lowest seeds and remaining other two teams meet.
