The Sydney International is called as Apia International Sydney Tennis as of 2012 for sponsorship reasons. Originally, Sydney International model was shaped in 1885, when colonial officials settled on choosing the best tennis player in each of the colonies and to utilize the tournament to help with selection to the Australasia Davis Cup team. However, it was played as a permanent annual event in 1935. After change of locations, since 2000, the tournament is played at the Sydney International Tennis Centre, in Homebush,a town of Western Sydney, Australia. There are 15 outdoor courts and a centre court at the venue. Both men’s and women’s event is played on outdoor hardcourts.

In 2016, the Apia International Sydney Tennis was held from 10th to 16th January and was part of the Australian Open Series in preparation for Grand Slam. In 2015, Juan Martín (Argentina) and Tsvetana Pironkova (Bulgaria) won men’s and women’s singles title respectively. Daniel Nestor (Canada) and Nenad Zimonjic (Serbia) were champions of men’s double event and Timea Babos (Hungary) and Lucie Safarova (Czech Republic) won Doubles title.
