History about Wembley Arena
Wembley Arena is a beautiful outdoor arena at Wembley. It is situated in the London Borough of Brent and is opposite to the Wembley Stadium.
The Wembley Arena was built by Arthur Elvin for the 1934 Empire Games. It originally had a swimming pool known as the Empire Pool. The last time the pool was used was in the 1948 Summer Olympics. This building was used for multiple purposes like comedy, music and family entertainment as well as sports.
Wembley Arena was later renovated at the same time when Wembley Stadium was done. This arena is the second largest indoor arena and it has a seating capacity of 12,500. The O2 arena is the third largest indoor concert venue after O2 and Earls Court.
Music- Wembley Arena
Ever since the opening of the Wembley Arena in 1934, it is known to be the third largest indoor concert venue and the second largest indoor arena of London. It has hosted many world famous concerts of popular artists and different genres of music from around the world.
Earlier when the venue was known as “Empire Pool” it hosted a concert in 1960s the annual New Musical Express Poll Winners concert. There were 10,000 audiences who viewed and popular bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Cliff Richard & The Shadows were a part of it along with many other famous bands.
Sport- Wembley Arena
Other than music, the Wembley Arena also witnessed many sport events. The Master snooker tournament is held in the month of January every year in the Wembley Arena. Other sport events like MMA, ice hockey and boxing.
In the 1948 Summer Olympics, there were a number of events hosted in the arena like swimming, water polo, diving and boxing. During 1940s, 50s and 60s the two teams, Wembley Lions and Wembley Monarchs were the well known ice hockey teams who performed regularly.
The Horse of the Year Show was held in 1959-2002 at the Wembley Arena. The 2012 Summer Olympics are going to be held at the Wembley Arena where rhythmic gymnastics and badminton will be played.
Other entertainments- Wembley Arena
There are many events that are hosted at the Wembley Arena like comedy nights like the Bill Bailey, David Baddiel, Russell Howard and Eddie Izzard. The first comedian to perform at the arena was Sean Lock. He played the Fight of the Conchords.
Other than these, the Wembley Arena hosts ice shows that include Disney on Ice, Holiday on Ice and Dancing on Ice. The WWF (World Wrestling Federation) is also held at the Wembley Arena.
