ExCel Stadium


ExCel stadium is one of the biggest venues of the London 2012 games. The stadium is selected to host various games and sports which are going to be involved in this Summer Olympics. The owner of the stadium is Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company. The modernized stadium was opened in 2000 and later in 2010 phase II is also opened. Sir Robert McAlpine was the main person who built the center of the sporting complex in 2000. In 2008, the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company took over the sporting complex. The second phase of the sporting complex which was opened in 2010 which cost them a whooping £164m.


The sporting complex was first planned to be built in 1981. The Royal Victorian dock was closed for various reasons for commercial traffic in the same year. The center of the dock was only used whenever it hosted annual London Boat Show. In this show various vessels from all over the world would come to showcase themselves in this boat show. These vessels came through the path of the center dock. The various vessels have to come in from the center dock and participate in the center of the Royal Victorian Dock.

ExCel London has hosted many events since that time. It has hosted nearly more than 3000 events. It is considered to be one of the elite sports complexes which are available all around the world.

About ExCel

The ExCel stadium is known for its top class facilities and accommodations for the participants. There are many events which took place in this arena. There are many facilities for various sports in the complex. It is also regarded to be in the top 50 companies which are eco friendly. It stands in the 44th position in the top 50 list. Some of the salient features of the sporting complex are –

  • £500 million is the usage figure of using this venue for international events.
  • After the expansion of phase II, the total space of the complex has increased up to 50%. Now the venue stands on a massive 100,000 m2.
  • The venue has the capacity to accommodate 70,000 visitors per day. There are 5 hotel and 6,000 car parking spaces.
  • Since 2000, the venue has hosted 3,500 events and has received more than 7 million visitors from 200 different countries.
  • It is also regarded as the most fuel efficient and energy efficient companies all around the world.
  • It has reduced its gas consumption by 64% since 2000.

London 2012

The ExCel is one of the major hosts of London 2012. It is selected as the venue for paralympics and also for Summer Olympics. It is going to host various sports and games. The lists of sports which are going to be contested in this arena are

The ExCel will be conducting nearly around 143 sessions of games in this event which is a huge number.  There are many sport events which will be conducted for the open public. The testing of these facilities will be done 1 year prior to the London 2012. After the games, ExCel will be functioning as Europe’s largest and most versatile exhibition spaces.
