IPL was the master plan of Lalit Modi and the BCCI to subdue Indian Cricket League. The league which was formed to bring the young talent into the public eye is now closed as there were many differences between ICL and BCCI. Therefore as a counter attack IPL was launched in a similar format with lot of star players playing and adding glitter to the league. The IPL adopted the EPL pattern and started to form teams by making the team owners bidding for the players. Many foreign players were roped into the league and it also paved way to earn big money. The only cricket format played in the IPL is the T20 games.
There are 3 seasons which were successfully organized till now. In the 4th season, another 2 teams were introduced to the total list making it 10 teams in the total. Though the 1st and 3rd IPL were hosted in India, 2nd season of the IPL was hosted in South Africa due to security reasons. The 4th season is anyhow again being held in India only.
The IPL was not such a smooth ride after all there were many hiccups since the starting. The organizing of the first IPL was not appreciated a lot though it was a major hit. Not many people liked the idea of moving the IPL to South Africa as it seemed to portray India as an insecure country for foreigners. In the 3rd IPL, there was lot of speculations which rose saying that the whole league is fixed. Some internal confessions of the players showed told that there were many things which were not in the right place. Some of the performances of the players made it evident that they were not playing to the best of their abilities.
After this there were some financial concerns to the board which was managing the IPL. The government found that many documents were not available following an inspection of the bidding documents. Many team owners were not ready to provide the documents and lots of cases have been booked in Lalit Modi for running scandals by using the brand name of IPL.
Later the complete board of the IPL had to be changed by the BCCI and Lalit Modi resigned and is fighting legal battles against all the accusations which are against him.
