History & Etymology

The early of Guyana goes way back to the 14th century when the tribes like Carib & Arawak tribes came here and inhabited. Dutch ruled over this region during the 16th & the 17th century before the British took control and this place came to known as the British Guyana. Apart from the local tribes this place consisted of slaves, labors and the imprisoned people of Portugal, Germany, Scotland, China and India. During the 2nd World War, US military had used this place as their airbase.

Geographical setting

Mainly divided into 4 natural regions, Guyana is a hilly country and it is a combination of some beautiful mountains, grassy savannah and the internal highlands. Mount Ayanganna, Mount Roraima, River Rupununi, the fabulous range of Kanuku Mountain have altogether made this place one of the famous tourist spots of this part of the world. Some of the rivers of this country are: Essequibo, Berbice, Demerara etc. the 92 miles gorgeous Shell Beach down the north-west coast of Guyana is something that will please the mind of any traveler.

Demographics & the neighboring countries

Guyana is bordered by nations like Venezuela and Brazil & Suriname. Ethnicity of this country is heterogeneous and enslaved people from various parts of Europe, Asia and South American continent came here and inhabited. English is the official language here. East Indians can be found in galore in these countries. Apart from that many other tribes had come here in small groups and mixed with the stream of Guyanese people. The population of this place is also increasing due to the inclusion of various races from different parts of America.

The year when Guyana got freedom

Guyana got it’s independence from the hands of the British kingdom in 1966 and then got the status of a republic union in the year 1970.

Government, politics and the infrastructure

over the years Guyana has indeed suffered a lot because of political instability. For the last couple decade, many political violence were motivated by people for their own benefit. The rate of murder during the 2002-2004 season was very high. The economic growth also had to suffer due to political tension. Jagdeo is the current president of Guyana.
It will be wrong to say that Guyana don’t have an ideal infrastructure for an overall growth of the country, but due to various political problem it has not been able to blossom properly.

Economy

A very poor country, Guyana’s economy is mainly dependant upon the gold and bauxite mining and also upon sugar growing. But there is a favorable ambiance for trade initiatives and agricultural definitely holds the key for the economic development. But shortage of electric supply is a big obstacle for economic growth.

Culture

One of the 4 non-Hispanic countries, Guyana’s culture is very unique and similar to the Caribbean. This country is extremely passionate about the game of Cricket. Many players from Guyana played for the West Indies national cricket side. Guyana also has a national football side. A typical flavor of the Afro-Guyanese culture can also be seen in this country. Rich Jumbees folklore also another unique thing of this country. The religion of this place consists of Hindu, Roman Catholic, Muslim, Pentecostal and the Christian denominations.

Capital City

The capital city of Guyana is Georgetown, a very happening city. The influence of the Dutch and even the British can still be found in this city. The youth and the new generation of this city are heavily moved by American culture.

Education system

once upon a time Guyana was an educational hub of the entire Caribbean. But after the 1980s the education system got degraded due to various political problems. The education facilities need to be developed especially in the fields of Science & Technology.

Guyana is quite famous for its passion & love for the game of Cricket. Guyanese music is also quite famous.
