History and Etymology

The history of the human settlers in Guatemal goes back to 10,000 BC. According to the archaeological proof, the earlier settlers of the country were gatherers or hunters. But still the confusion remains same about the original natives of the island.

Though the country was colonized by several countries and invaders, but remained under the occupation of Spain for long time.

Demography

Ladinos cover the maximum part of the country’s population. They are also known as Mestizo and Whites. Apart form them the population of the country is accompanied by 9.1% Kiche, 8.4 %Kaqchikel, 7.9 %Mam and 6.3 %

Many people of the country started living outside of the country being forced by the civil war. Majority of Guatemalans diaspora is situated in United State with ranging from the 480,000 up to 1 million.

Government and Politics

Guatemala is a democratic country and it s represented by the president. The president of the country plays the role of both, the head of the government and the head of state. In order to rule the country, the government exercises the executive power. The multi party system is also headed the president himself. The judiciary of the nation depends upon the legislature and the executive.

Culture

The culture of the country is diverse. Music is the integral part of the country’s culture. The Guatemala music possesses the variety of expressions and styles. The country has introduced the charm of the European music with the world. As far as the official language of the country is concerned, it is Spanish that is used in most of the offices. In city, French is also prominent as the spoken language, but in the rural area people use to talk in Mayan language. The culture of the country is greatly influenced with Christianity because the religion in the country is dominated by Christianity.  50 to 60 percent people are Catholic and 40 percent people are Protestant and only one percent Mayan is there. People are having keen interest in literature. Guatemala National Prize in Literature is the most recognized award given to the scholars of literature.

The country is having well developed education system. There are many public elementary as well as school up to secondary level running by the government of the nation. The government provides free education up to secondary level and not only that but also the free, uniform, book, and transportation are provided to the poor students by the government. Apart form the government schools, there are number of private schools that educate number of students. The public university called Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala is the main university of the country that gives the higher education to the people.

Economy and Infrastructure

According to CIA World Factbook, the per capita of Guatemala is US$5,000. It is counted among developing countries and is still facing many of social problems. It is also counted among top ten poorest countries of Latin America. 29% of the population is under the poverty line in the country and more than 400,000 people are unemployed. Tourism is the main source of income in the country and it also plays an important role in the economy of the country.

Neighbor countries

The Central American country Guatemala is bordered by its neighboring countries such as Mexico at the northwest, Honduras and the EI Salvador at the southeast.

Geographical Setting

Except the south coastal territory of the country, the whole Guatemala is mountainous. There are two big chain of the mountain in the country that participate the nation into three main regions. Almost all of the main cities are situated at the highlands as well as Pacific coast regions.

Freedom

The general of Guatemala proclaimed the independency of Guatemala form Spain in 1821 and after two years it was dissolved.

Capital city

The capital of Guatemala is the Guatemala City and it is reputed as the biggest city of the country as well as of Central America.

Total Population

As far as the total population of Guatemala is concerned, it is 12,728,111 as according to the census of 2007.
