The Republic of Gambia is generally known as the Gambia. It is a country which is located in Western Africa. On the continent of Africa it is the smallest mainland country which is bordered in the south, north and east by the Senegal. The country also has the small coast in west on Atlantic Ocean.

History:
In the 10th century the Muslim scholars and the merchants became established in the many commercial centers of West Africa and the trade route of the trans- Saharan for the ivory and gold. The rulers of the kingdom by the 11th and 12th century as the Gao, Ancient Ghana and the Takrur were converted to the Islam and appointed the Muslims people who were educated in Arabic as the advisers. The Gambia was the tributary to Mali Empire.
Demographics:
The broad range of the ethnic group’s lives in the country with the less of inters tribal friction, each one of them preserving their own tradition and language. The largest of them is the Madinka tribes which are followed by Jola, Fula, Serhule and Wolof. Near about the 3,500 residents of the non- African including the families of the Lebanese and the Europeans.
Government and Policies:
The country is the oldest existing democracies of the multi party in Africa. The country conducts the elections of the freely contested in every five years since the independence. The APRC has maintained the good majority in legislative elections in the National Assembly that were held in the January 2002, mainly after the opposition of the United Democratic Party that was boycotted by the legislative elections.
Culture:
The country is the multi cultural and the multi ethnic society. There is none of the region in the country which is fully habited by the single group. The racial groups are closely joined together by the cohabitation and thus, there is definite symbiosis of the culture among them. There is the tendency towards establishment of the National Culture of the Gambia that will be the sum of all the racial culture.
Economy:
The country has the market based and the liberal economy which is characterized by the subsistence of the traditional agriculture, the historic reliance on the export and the groundnuts earnings, low import duties, procedure of the minimal administrative, fluctuations of the exchange rate with no controls on the exchange, significant tourism industry and the re-export of the trade built around the ocean port.
Infrastructure:
The resources of the infrastructure for the production are tremendously limited. The supply of the electricity is fully based on the diesel generator. All the products of the petroleum are imported. The use of the groundnut shells is expanding for the output of the solar energy and fuel. The other sources of the energy are under development.
Education:
The primary education in the country is free but it is not compulsory. In the year 2000 the 156,800 children enrolled in primary school, whereas on the other hand 56,200 children enrolled in secondary school. The institute of the higher education in the country includes the Gambia College which is on Brikama and the many training and the technical schools.
Geographical Settings:
It is a very narrow and small country whose borders reflect the meandering River Gambia. The country covers the total area of the 11,300 km2. The present boundaries of the country were defined in the year 1889 after agreement among the France and United Kingdom. The country is almost the enclave of the Senegal and is also the smallest county in Africa.

The country gained its independence from United Kingdom on 18th February 1965 and the country was declared as republic on 24th April 1970.
