Etymology
The earlier history states the name Finland has been derived form Suommma that means Fen Land or form the Suoniemi that means Fen Cape. Finland is having resemblance with the Scandinavian, placenames Finnmark, Finnveden and many of other places initiated with fin, in Norway and Sewden.
History
As per the archaeological evidence, the Finland got its settlement around 8500 BCE. The present day Russia and Estonia are the main source of settlers. In 3000 BC, the 1st pottery appeared in the country.
Culture
The culture of Finland is greatly influenced with Swedish culture. In the rural area of the country, the folk tradition such as swastika is still prevalent. The Finnish literature, architecture, art and craft give the real glimpse of country’s culture. Music is having an important place in the culture of Finland. The church music as well as folk music is the integral part of county’s culture. Earlier the lyric of church music was composed in Latin texts but later the Finnish language became the medium of church music. Finnish is the main spoken language but Swedish is reputed as the official language. As far as family is concerned, the trend of nuclear family is prominent in the Finnish society.

The mother tongue of the Finland is Finnish and most of the people communicate in Finnish in the country. But the biggest minority language is Swedish and it is also reputed as the 2nd official language of the country.

Most of the Finns are the members of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. Minority of the people belong to Finnish Orthodox Church. Protestant and the Roman Catholic are very few in population.

The pre-tertiary or the primary education is provided at the municipal level. The county is having number of private schools but only 3% students are taking education in private schools. The primary education of the country can not be compared with the education level of the European Country. 7 years has been fixed as the age to start formal education whereas primary schools take the admission 6 year old child. After successful completion of primary and secondary education, student go for trade schools that prepare them for profession. The students graduate with science streams are more than 30%.
Neighboring country
Finland is bordered by its neighboring country such as Russia at the east and Sweden at the west. Lying along the Gulf of Finland, Estonia can also be counted as the neighbor of Finland
Geographical setting
Finland is the nation of the thousands of islands and lakes. Saimaa is most famous lake in the country that is counted as the 5th largest in whole Europe. The landscape of the country is generally flats with some hills. Halti is the highest point of the country and is located at the north of Lapland that borders the Norway and Finland. The landscapes cover mostly the taiga forests and the fens accompanied by small arable land.

Finland became full independent in 1917. During the World War II, it became success to maintain its freedom.
