FIFA World Cup 2014 Final - Sunday, 13th July, 2014

Argentina vs. Germany (0-1)

Germany emerge winners in what proved as the most deadlocked game in the tournament. The lone goal was scored by Mario Gotze in the extra time (113’) as he chested a cross by Andres Schurrle and volleyed into the Argentinean nets. While we didn’t see more goals, the game was certainly action packed and both the sides showed exciting resilience. There were many missed chances in the match but it was only due to the strong presence of the opponents. This is Germany’s fourth title considering the previous team to be West Germany. However, this is the first time that a European country brings home the Cup. The Germans had been a dominant team throughout the tournament and it has been a well deserved win. They will be remembered for shackling the hosts with a 7-1 win to proceed into the finals and claim their rightful victory.

Into the match, it was Germany who was in possession of the ball for the majority of the match (64%). There were a series of interesting tackles and passes. It could have been 1-0 for Argentina in the 48th minute as Messi misses an easy chance and guides a perfect pass from Biglia wide right of the nets. It was in the 89th minute that Germany made the game changing substitution with Klose being replaced by Mario Gotze in the midfield. Argentina missed another possible chance as Hummels tries to tackle Rojo instead of passing it on to his men. As he misses, Palacio was all alone in the goal with the net in the mercy of Hummels but he shoots its hopelessly wide. It was in the 113th minute that Schurrle whips a cross to find Gotze between two Argentinean defenders and he chests down and scores a late classic.
