The commonwealth of the Dominica is usually known as the Dominica. It is the island nation in Caribbean Sea. The meaning of the word in Latin means the “Sunday” a day which was discovered by the Christopher Columbus.

Dominica History:

In the 14th century the earlier indigenous Arawak People of the island were exterminated by the Caribs. The people of the Arawak are guided from waters of River Orinoco to the others islands and the Dominica by the South Equatorial Current of Caribbean. All these descendants of former Tainos were overthrown by Kalinago which is the tribe of Caribs.

Dominica Demographics:

Today almost all the nationals of the Dominica are the descendants of the slaves of the African, which are brought in the 18th century by the colonial planters. Nevertheless there is the important mixed minority with the East Indian groups or the Indo- Caribbean, the small minority of the European origin and also there are very small number of the Syrians, Asians and Lebanese.

Government and Policies:

The island is the parliamentary democracy with in commonwealth of the nations. The head of the state is the president, while on the other hand the executive power takes the rest in cabinet, which is headed by prime Minister. There are 30 members in the unicameral parliament. The house of the assembly consists of the 9 senators and the 21 members who are elected directly or can also be elected by other members or can be appointed by president.

Culture:

The dance and music are the significant facts of the culture of the island. The yearly celebrations of independence display the outburst of the customary dance and song which are preceded from 1997 by the weeks of expressions of the Creole as the “World Creole Music Festival” and the “Creole in the Park”.

Economy:

The economy of the island depends on the both the agriculture and tourism. 20% of the inhabitants of the country are engaged in agricultural sector and the prime agricultural exports of the country includes the:

  • Tobacco
  • Copra
  • Vegetables and
  • Coconut oil

Infrastructure:

Due to the rugged shorelines and the mountainous landscape, the infrastructure of the country is tremendously limited. The roads of the country are confined mostly to coast. In the total of the 780 km the 394 km is paved. Most part of the islands is entirely unreachable by car. There are no railways in the country while on the other hand you will find the two major commercial ports near the Roseau at Woodridge and the other in the city of the Portsmouth which is in the northwest coast.

Education:

The island consist the state college, which was earlier named as the Clifton Dupigny Community College. Some of the students of the island get scholarships by government of the Cuban for attending the universities in the Cuba. The other students go to schools pf the US, UK or some other countries for having the higher education or go to the university of West Indies.

Geographical Settings:

It is the borderless country and the island nation in Caribbean Sea in north most of Windward Islands. The size of Dominica is approximately 289.5 sq miles. The most part of the country is covered by the rainforest and the country is also home to the globes second biggest boiling lake. The country is home to the many of the protected areas which includes the National Park and the Cabrits.

Independence:

The country gained its independence on the 3rd November 1978 by United Kingdom.

Currency:

Till 1862 and again from the 1913 the currency of the Dominica was dollar. The East Caribbean dollars recently circulates. The first dollar consists of the many of the holed or cut Spanish colonial coins and the Spanish dollars. Dollar was divided into the bits. The sterling was established as official currency of Dominica in the year 1862.

According to the census of the year 2001 the total population of the country was registered as the 69,625. Nevertheless this excludes the 1849 persons that are closed in houses.
