The Republic of China uses the name Chinese Taipei to participate in the international organizations. Because of his relations the People’s Republic of China was considered as the authority of China. To avoid this international community started avoiding the use of Republic of China as well as the People’s Republic of China so that they cannot be regarded as two countries when participating in international organizations.
History of Chinese Taipei:-
Before the origin of the country there was a lake which when dried become wet spongy and grassy lowland and was used as fishing by the people of Pingpu tribe. After so many years Han Chinese came to this land and settled there. In 1790 a farm was established by the farmer known as fukien province which is know called as the central Taipei.
After that many Chinese communities came to the country and settled there out of which the first area they occupied was the Mankas. After a long war in 1853 the people from Chuanchou fled to the Tamsui River in the north. With the trade in tea and camphor through the Tamsui River the country’s economic development increases. So mainly the Tamsui River is behind the establishment of the country Taipei.
The country is mainly constructed by the Chinese figures and the north and south face of the country is surrounded by the mountains and walls. The area covered by the walls was known as cheng-nei. When in 1895 Japanese came to the country they set up the administrative headquarters and started developing the country.
As Japanese build the roads and infrastructure but the Taiwanese were not satisfied by them because of their behavior. When the World War II takes place most of the infrastructure was destroyed and the economy is totally finished. By the end of the war Taiwan was ruled by the Chinese under the Yalta agreement. At this time General Chen Yi became the governor but under his rule the anti-Chinese riots broke out in 1947 and this period was known as the ‘2-28’ incident under which 30,000 people has to lost their lives.
In 1949 the period of ‘two Chinas Saga’ began because the communists take over the China due to which Chinese ruler Chiang Kai-shek moved his government to Taiwan. In 1960’s the Taipei became the richest country in Asia. The China United Nation seat was lost by the Republic of China in 1971 due to which the government was also not recognized but when in 1981 the martial arts were lifted the country overcome the economic crisis.
In 1994 the country became fully independent and after that in 1997 Dalai Lama made a six day visit to the country. Now Taipei is worried about the tension of ‘One China’ policy because due to this policy the country has to accept itself as a part of China. But Taiwan’s president was not in favor of this policy and he scrapped the National Unification Council in 2006.
Politics and government at Chinese Taipei:-
In Taipei the President is the head of the state and premier is the head of the government. The first National Assembly was established in 1947 which has the right to choose the President and to improve the constitution. The second National Assembly was elected in 1991 which consists of 325 members and the constitution was improved in 1994.
In 2000 the elections were only held by the National Assembly to choose the President or to improve the constitution and not in any other case. After making a valid constitution which was also passed by the Legislative Yuan, the National Assembly handed all its powers to it.
The Legislative Yuan consists of the executive branch, legislative branch and judicial branch. The executive branch is headed by the Premier who is chosen by the President which in turn the head of the state as well as the commander in chief of the armed forces. The policy and administrative cases are handled by the Premier, vice premier and the cabinet members of this branch.
The legislative branch is an important law making branch which was firstly elected in 1947 and after that in 1992 comprises of 773 seats. When it was elected for the third and fourth time the seats for the members reduced to 225 and the term limit is of three years.
The judicial branch looks after the court system comprises of 16 member Council of Grand Justice who re further appointed by the president for 9 years.
Chinese Taipei Geography:-
The country is located in the south eastern corner of Eurasia. It shares its borders with East China Sea to the north, Bashi channel to the south, Taiwan Strait to the west and Pacific Ocean to the east. The country is located between 4 degrees 11 minutes latitude and 5 degrees 16 minutes longitude and covers an area of 36000 sq. km.
The two types of climates are found in the country because the tropic of cancer lies in the middle of the country. Tropical climate is found in the north whereas the sub tropical climate in the south due to which 2500 millimeters of rainfall is recorded every year.
Economy of Chinese Taipei:-
The economy of the country is rich and foreign trade plays a vital role in this. It is the largest supplier of computer chip manufacturing, LCD panel manufacturer, DRAM computer memory and many more. Textile production is also the major industrial export sector and the largest import and export partners are United States and mainland China.
On the agricultural side rice, sugar cane, fruits and vegetables are the major crops but in comparison to the industrial sector the agricultural production is very slower.
Chinese Taipei Currency:-
New Taiwan Dollar is the currency which is basically used by the people of the country.
Demographics of Chinese Taipei:-
About 22,858,872 people are residing in the country and most of them are Han Chinese while others are Taiwanese aborigines. The aborigines lived in the eastern part of the country which is mostly surrounded by the mountains.
Mandarin is the official language which can be easily spoken by everyone and is also used in the schools to teach the students. The other languages like Hakka Dialect and Taiwanese are also spoken by the people of the country. In Taipei 25 religions are followed by the people but mostly Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism is followed in comparison to Christianity.
Chinese Taipei Culture:-
In the culture of Chinese Taipei there is a reflection of Han Chinese, Japanese, European and American cultures. The main cuisine of the country is the bubble tea. The famous sport of the country is basketball, volleyball. Baseball, golf, badminton, table tennis and martial arts and famous sportspersons are Allen Iverson, Kevin Garnett, Michael Jordan, Grant Hill, Glen Rice and many more.
On the press and broadcasting there were strict restrictions because the freedom of press is guaranteed by the constitution. KTV is very popular in the country as many people saw Taiwanese dramas on that. People of the country spend their vacations either by playing mahjong or by singing karaoke.
The famous persons of the country are:
a) Cinema director Ang Lee who has also won the academy award.
b) Pop artists like Jay Chou, Alan Luo, Jolin Tsai, and David Tao.
c) Hip hop artists like Dog G, MC Hot Dog, Machi, and L.A.Boyz.
