World Pneumonia Day 2016

This year, the theme for World Pneumonia Day is “Innovate to End Child Pneumonia”,and  2015 theme is "Every Breath Counts: Stop Pneumonia Now " and 2014 theme is "Innovate to End Child Pneumonia".

When: World Pneumonia Day was established in the year 2013 and is celebrated every year on the 12th of November.

Why

On this day, more than a 100 organizations worldwide join hands with the Global coalition Against Child Pneumonia to raise awareness about this deadly infection that claims the lives of thousands of young children, every year. Pneumonia is a preventable disease and yet more than a million children under the age of 5 succumb to it year after year. It is the foremost killer of children surpassing AIDS, measles and malaria, all combined together. Yet many are unaware of the dangers of pneumonia. Hence health organizations and NGOs world over have joined hands to focus attention on this deadly disease by bringing together celebrity ambassadors, policy makers, health councils and institutions and governments to one platform on the World Pneumonia Day. The aim is:

1. To create public awareness about pneumonia that kills one child under the age of 5, every 20 seconds.

2. To promote interventions for preventing and treating pneumonia

3. To generate an action plan to combat pneumonia.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms for Pneumonia are :

  • Shortness of Breath
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Shaking Chills

How

The coalition has been successful in bringing together the UN, UNICEF and WHO to include eradication of pneumonia among their foremost agendas. As part of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) program, the UN has included eradication of pneumonia by year 2015 as one of its eight goals. At an individual level, the organization plans to hold health camps through its celebrity ambassadors like Gwyneth Paltrow and administer free vaccinations to the poorest of the poor.
