53 days, 19 hours, 20 minutes, 52 secs left until World Ozone Day on Saturday, 16th September, 2017
World’s Ozone Day is meant to create awareness among the people about the ozone layer and the protective actions the human beings need to take. Ozone layer is the layer of gas which shields the earth from the direct effect of sun rays by absorbing ultraviolet radiation. The ozone layer itself is getting affected by the man-made chemicals which possess ozone depleting substances like chlorine and bromine. This leads to the increase of ultraviolet radiation that causes skin cancer and many other complications.
World’s Ozone Day is celebrated annually on 16th of September.
Observing the future affect that is caused due to the depletion of ozone layer, United Nations General Assembly has proposed for the Montreal Protocol. This was signed by 28 countries in 1985 and was drafted on September 16th, 1987. In 1994, September 16th was declared as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
The Montreal Protocol’s aim is protecting the ozone layer taking appropriate actions in control of depleting potentials. The protocol has to control around 100 types of chemicals of different categories in production as well as consumption.
The scientific measurements were taken place since the 1956. The ozone layer was noticed with a hole at Southern Hemisphere in 1979 with 1.09 million square kilo meters in area and it is 24.1 millions square kilometers in the year 2014. Though these figures fluctuate, the average level has been increased after the discovery of chlorofluorocarbons. The Chlorofluorocarbons which are present in cosmetics and plastic materials cause high damage to ozone layer.
The plants may not grow when the ultraviolet radiation levels increase. This disturbs the whole chain of the living beings as human beings and other living beings are depended on the plants and tree, directly or indirectly. Thus, there is huge necessary of preventive measures to escape from the severe damage which the human being is going to cause themselves.
The celebrations of the day takes place around the world on 16th September to increase the awareness on decrease in Ozone layer. The theme for World Ozone Day as annual observance ‘Ozone and climate: Restored by a world united’ is for the year 2016. The States would be invited to promote the activities to achieve the objectives of the Protocol.
Most of the Social welfare societies and schools utilize the day by conducting meetings and programs to create awareness among the people.
