World Humanitarian Day is celebrated on 19th August every year across the countries and continents. This day is dedicated to recognize the work and contributions of people who devoted their lives for humanitarian causes. This special day was coined in 2003 by the general assembly of United Nations to coincide with the anniversary of bomb attack on UN headquarters in Bagdad, Iraq. This day also provides the chance to commemorate the positive spirit that inspires the humanitarian work around the world. United Nations started a programme on this day which is known as “The World Need More” and appealed to all the countries to come forward for extending the helping hands in the direction. It is the outcome of the serious efforts of the Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation and his family working closely with the ambassadors of countries like France, Switzerland, Japan and Brazil when they propounded the World Humanitarian Day.
This day is truly dedicated to all humanitarians worldwide. On the World Humanitarian Day the focus is to increase the people understanding of the humane assisting activities. Many agencies honor the members of the society who have dedicated their live and sacrificed a lot for the social works. Even the people who have got injured in doing the humanitarian works are also paid homage and tribute. Many agencies and localities work to improve the understanding level of the people by distributing different literatures. Press and media also take the integral role here by spreading the awareness among people on the World Humanitarian Day. Many public events and other workshops also become the part of the events. Nowadays different countries are coming up with numerous World Humanitarian Day themes to celebrate it in most effective and productive ways.
World Humanitarian Day has become very popular and many activities are organized by several people. At various places people organize social campaign by choosing any humanitarian cause and then they try to bring awareness. Governments is also organizing big events where they call different people who have done some or the other thing for humanitarian purposes and give them recognition, appreciation, certificates, accolade, prizes, memento etc in the public gatherings. Kids take their resolutions that they will continue for the entire year and try to do some noble work on this special day.
World Humanitarian Day has a very key role in strengthening the society because it offers a plate from where all can come forward and put effort to achieve social goals. There is so much unrest and upheavals in the modern society which is creating lot of problems like criminal activities, physical torture, human exploitation etc. Many countries have started celebrating it at a very large scale to spread the awareness among the people about the requirement of being human and doing the social work in this regards. Apart from this it attempts to maintain a healthy and friendly relationship among all the stakeholders of the society.
