Health is wealth – and when health is lost, something definitely is lost. There could not be anything more fundamental to life than air – and the right to breathe easy. That is what is stake when it comes to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD. And World COPD Day is an attempt to raise awareness about the condition that afflicts legions across countries and continents, every year.
When the world comes together on one stage, reflects on the importance of health and breathing, and tries to be inclusive in its approach to life and people, it tends to be known as World COPD Day. The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or GOLD, is the institution that has taken up the cause of COPD, where healthcare professionals, members and representatives of GOLD and members of the public could be a part of a global movement to change lives.
COPD is an acute condition that afflicts millions of people around the world and is predicted to be as vehement as becoming the third leading cause of worldwide deaths by 2030. The theme for World COPD Day for 2012, which was held on the 14th of November, was “It’s Never Too Late”. The idea is that you could bring about a change to your own life if you were to find yourself struggling with symptoms associated with COPD. There are educational campaigns, patient counseling sessions, education and awareness camps, as well as pulmonary tests that are conducted free of charge to screen for, prevent, address, and cure people with COPD.
